Paul Joyce (The Times): "Barcelona will have to table a huge bid far in excess of the £118 million offer rejected in the summer for Liverpool to even consider allowing Philippe Coutinho to leave in the January transfer window"

Even the Liverpool mouthpieces are saying a deal could happen now, whereas in the summer they maintained that there was no chance.

I think it just might happen and happen soon.

At the end of the day I shouldn't care about the finances, it's not my money, I simply enjoy what's happening on the pitch. Also we're going to crash badly in 3 or 4 years anyway once Iniesta, Busquets, Messi, Pique and Suarez all are gone or declined for good at the same time. So might as well YOLO it now while we can.

However, € 150M or € 180M or whatever is a joke. Just because an oil club paid € 222M for Neymar, who is at least the most marketable player on the planet, doesn't make any half-decent attacking midfielder worthy of such a fee unless, maybe, he was still 18 years old and could give 10+ seasons before any sort of decline.

By the time Coutinho can play CL knockouts for us he will be nearly 27. I give him 4 prime seasons at most.

But then again: not my money, so what do I care?

The intrigue over the Brazil forward’s future intensified yesterday after an advert offering Barcelona shirts with Coutinho’s name appeared on the Catalan club’s official website.

Didn't it appear in Nike's official website?

Agree with all of this but the one place their money does matter is with budgeting. After all we don't realistically expect the board to spend money without any restraint.

If Coutinho comes for something like 180M and then the board end up not buying Griezmann because of that, is that worth it? Would Griezmann+Arthur be a bigger net improvement for a lesser combined price than Coutinho alone? Idk as that's a pretty tough choice but it's a realistic scenario. The goal is, as you said, to maximize our quality for the twilight of Messi's prime. Money limits how much and in what areas we can improve the squad, it's important to make the right decision so that we can properly compete in the CL for the next ~4 years.

VVd has just signed for Liverpool for 150% of the world most expensive defender in the history (which btw was Walker who signed last summer) and if you count Mpabbe then 7 of 10 most expensive players in history was signed in 2016 or after.
That is how the market now, it isn't just Neymar deal.
Coutinho right now is probably top 10 players in the world tbh. It is normal that Liverpool will ask for crazy money and they will find those who pay it.
But I do think we have to be careful here and assess other possibilities, I don't want our summer to be just Coutinho and that's it. We need to have alternatives

I honestly dont care. Right now, it's best that we give Messi all the support he can on the pitch and the market is already fked right now and Barca dug their own grave, so Barca cannot be in the position to negeotiate. If u wanna blame, blame the incompetent board. But since they cannot be removed then I dont care if they splurge their money, if we couls potentially exchange it a few CLs in the next few years.

La Masia is already neglected big time so I dont think we can find a half decent talent any time soon at this rate and policy we are following.

It's very difficult to discuss the price of Countinho. Previous purchases look cheap when we see their price today. Maybe this goes for Coutinho as well in 4-5 years time?
When we look back on our transfer history there are signings that we shouldn't have made. Typically because of how things turned out on the pitch. Some players simply didn't live up to the expectations of the price. On the other hand, there are examples of the oppisite which always is a pleasure to see. Players like Umtiti, Semedo, Ter Stegen are the first who comes to my mind. In these cases we really got value for money. We also spent a lot of money on Neymar (who knows how much behind the scenes?) and Suarez. The amount has never been questioned because of their quality and the competences they gave the team. If they had become a "flop" their pricetags would have been heavliy questioned, just like when we evaluted on Zlatan. But because this never happened, their prices were never an issue. If we buy Countinho and he brings the quality we definitely need (despite of our good results), his perhaps €150 fee will never be any problem. These fees may seem large right now but as mentioned in the beginning: maybe in some years we will realize this was just how the market turned out? One thing is for sure. If we can get Countinho and he gives us the same as Modric has given Madrid since 2012, the fee will never be a problem. And don't forget that we've already bought Dembele for an astonshing amount. But this goes relatively unnoticed because of our good results.

If he doesn't come in the next few days he won't come in January. I would say it will happen this week or won't happen at all.

I agree that up to 180m is way too much but honestly we've crossed that line a number of times now, the cat is out of the bag. We paid out the ass way over value for the likes of Gomes, Paulinho, Arda, etc. Even Dembele really isn't worth 140m. Neymar was also sold under value at 222m, we should have simply forced them to pay the buyout and taxes with 0 negotiation (the buyout should've been way higher in the first place).

idk, but to me the point is that it seems too little too late to be making a stand on prices at this point. Barca have already been thoroughly bullied by clubs this past summer in negotiations, deteriorated relationships with other clubs, and we are seen as one of the bigger antagonists in the transfer market right now and have had like 3 or 4 threats of reporting us to FIFA. We've already set our precedent for buying high and selling low, no club would let us forget that again while forging new agreements. It's just hard to see Barca not getting screwed over in marquee transfers these days.

We suck at everything under the sun in transfer tactics but neymar buyout price wasn't low. May seem like that in hindsight but back then it was the right amount.

The market shouldn't be that inflated with neymars transfer imo because its not strictly the quality of player that matters, but also his marketability etc. A large part of the justification of neymar's fee is his fame. Very few footballers right now are famous outside the footballing community apart from messi and ronaldo and neymar is one of them.

None of the high priced transfers after neymar had players that were half as marketable as him. 180 for couts is just way too fucking high.

I was always been critical of our midfield mess but right now we would be better off with what we have currently.
