9 - Robert Lewandowski

I really understand the emotional vesting of some of his fans, perhaps frustrated by the lack of consensus of his greatnest in all aspects of what makes a footballer remembered for decades to come, and the fact he was cheated out, in 2020, from Ballon d'Or but let's be honest, he is not as good as Messi or Ronaldo, even Neymar...maybe as good Suarez the biter, Robin van Persi, Berkamp, Ibra, Schevczenko, Henry .... etc.

If I'm allowed to use a certain analogy...Remember Bulls 2003, Jordan, Pippen, Rodman...Tony Kukoc joined them as the best of Europe...He did excellent, long shots, 3 pointers, decisive last second points and all, but Jordan was Messi, Pippen was Ronaldo and Kukoc was Lewa, out of their league. That's it!

Ehhh. No way. 👎 I am not blind. I am not buying this smelly bologna as a good kiełbasa ... He is not a good dribbler, in a classic definition of the word. Dribbling is not his weapon. He might have shown a few moments where he trick - fooled his opponents (e.g. love that heel pass trick against Tottenham in 2019 in the prelude of the 1:2 goal) but that's not enough to proclaim him a dribbler on par with Messi, Ronaldo the Portuguese, Neymar, Yamal, Musiala ...not even close. As a matter of fact, his dribbling attempts, more often than not, slow down the game flow, if not the ball repossesion.

In my memory, it was mostly encoded by the CL match: 2015 Arsenal-Bayern (2:0) that was an exemplification of his dribbling inability, when he numerous times tried to do Messi with his solo thrusts against Czech's goal that ended up in ball reposession and them gaining control.
When he was younger, say as recent as 2020, he still had some pace and his runs with the ball, like from half of the pitch with opponents chasing , countered with his strenght and balance control, did wonders but... dribbling it was not at all.
I dont actually think Cr is that good a dribbler - he's more of a kick and run merchant. Hazard and Neymar, Ribery, Iniesta etc far better examples of weaving, intelligent dribblers than him. Of course CR was a decent dribbler but he gave up a lot of it to focus on goalscoring.

Even when younger and more of a showboater, CR's dribbling was quite scrappy and often he took heavy touches and was more reactive, not looking in control of the ball. Decent dribbler but a step below a lot of players for me.

That aside, I agree with your general point on Lewa. People trying to paint Lewa as a 'good dribbler' leans into fanboy territory.

Lastly, Lewa at Barcelona has still some work to do on his legacy here, not to be remembered as 🚜.
Hopefully, this season he will prove everyone to the contrary, and I would consider that it would be a great achievement, if he could be remembered as good as Stoichkov is...
So far so good on this path...

I think considering everything , his high as shit salary and performances so far , if we'll manage to win the league this season , his transfer here would be a success in my eyes.

Sure , he's been trash in the CL before this season , but it is what it is.

Win the league , go play in the camel league or better yet, MLS and there would be no hard feelings towards him in the future.

So far, under Flick, he's been right on the money. Worth every penny....treble in the making and all that jazz.

His transfer is a 7/10 imo so far, he helped to win ll in Xavi's first season, scored many goals last season even though the first half was weak and until now he has been top this season.

If we compare this transfer to Coutinho and Dembouz, he has been excellent and dont forget he came as a old guy here!

If we win ll again his transfer would be a 8.5/10 !

Long termism in Football can be so overrated.

If you sign Lewandowski for 50 mil and can get 3/4 good seasons out of him and win trophies, that's great business really.

Imagine if you guys signed the young Darwin Nunez instead for 100 mil. You guys would be crying about another Dembele, Coutinho situation right now.

Football clubs like Barca have massive turnovers and revenue and can easily manage the finances in a couple of years even with their current issues. Lewandowski's transfer fee was cheap considering the current market and the 3 solid years he has given you. Only Haaland and Kane have more scored more goals in world Football than a washed up Lewandowski over this period. This season he's dominating Europe with more goals than any other player.

He has spearheaded Laporta's new Barca project brilliantly. He has performed well on the pitch, shown leadership qualities, mentored young players, won trophies and brought his own commercial value to the club. His performances, availability, reputation, behaviour and marketability clearly justify his big wages. Great and very shrewd signing by Laporta.

Nahhhh, I am giving it 10/10 if we win the league this season. Mission accomplished.
11/10 if we win the UCL.
