9 - Robert Lewandowski

Cannot really be in it without some success at the World Cup. Doesn't necessarily need to win it either as some teams are not well equipped for it, even though Portugal's had a couple of very good teams with him.

Not even a shot at him, but his performances in the WC in KO rounds is disgusting.
Yeah people say 'how can he win it with that Portugal team?' (though his Portugal team-mates were always underrated as an excuse for him.

But that is a strawman. He doesn't have to win it, just do well. Forlan, Modric, Rodriguez, Hagi, Stoitchkov and varius others have all done well with nations as small or smaller than Portugal, better than him. He has absolutely no excuses.

In fact, I would say that if he's as good as they claim he is, his fans should be tearing him apart for that too. If they make excuses for his struggles on the grandest stage of them all then that ironically says he's not as good as they want him to be anyway. If he was in the GOAT debate there really should be no hiding place.

You can add 2022 and 2024 to this.

So when they see trolls who are clearly only here to lick Lewa's arse put down Barca and its other players, that will naturally annoy them.
Of course you are right, I agree 100%. I also don't like it when other players are insulted... and here we come to a certain inaccuracy. Notice that I have never insulted any other player and I usually spoke when someone insulted Lewandowski. Why? First of all, I am Polish, I have been involved in football for over 30 years, secondly - my son plays football and I have always held Lewandowski up as a role model - starting with the effort he put into it, through commitment, healthy eating habits, etc. In a word, professionalism. Many players could have been better than him, but they were not professional enough and I am sure you know many such players yourself. Even when they call him "Polish tractor" it does not irritate me anymore, indeed Lewandowski has a specific way of moving, one could say "clumsy" but it clearly suits him. I also do not consider him the best striker, because there are many types of strikers - but he is a classic 9, and these are already "on the way out". And here again I could refer to many trolls who do not understand this - the classic 9 has a completely different style of play by design. Let these trolls I am talking about show me players who played an excellent match in every match. There are no such players, there are excellent performances, there are good ones, but there are also those that are better forgotten. It does not matter whether it is CR7, Messi, Benzema, Lewandowski or others. Everyone has weak moments - but here on this forum it looked as if some people were waiting for one bad move by Lewandowski and instead of watching the match, they came here to the forum and insulted. Notice one more thing that is rarely mentioned here, I wrote about it earlier - show me a player who missed several matches due to injury during his 18-year career. This is also a very high added value to the player and as a result increases his importance to the team.

Fair enough, pretty good post and I agree with most of it.

But the thing is - Lewa is praised here when he does well, and criticised when he doesn't, the same as any other player. The trolls who have posted here (and this is a good post by you) have made all sorts of excuses for his bad games and pinned the blame on other players by making stuff up half the time.

I don't necessarily mean you now, as that is a balanced post - but there's a few people on here who have a Lewa love and just want to protect him from criticism. I have a realistic opinion on him believing he's one of the best strikers of the last 30 years but there are several better in history. He's just not at Ronaldo 9, Muller, Romario or Van Basten level at all. But most others are arguable.

What I fully disagree with you on is your assertion that he's the best striker because he has scored the most goals - there's far more to footballers - even strikers - than goal stats.

Lewandowski's own care of body and soul is definitely one of his great assets. I gotta brag to you but I had pointed that out too, earlier in this thread or another. I could even risk an assertion that while he may not be striker GOAT but he's definitely GOAT of physical fitness and staying injury free, as opposed to Benzema, Kane, or Haaland, and many others.

P.S. I remember an interview with his wife Anna, I think at Kuba Wojewodzki, when she said how much he cares about his body, diet and sleep regimen.
Damn, they guy is completely tatoo free, not that it matters...but still very unique among today's footballers.

Another interesting thing to point out is that going back to the era before 1990s, perhaps even 2000s. It was extremely rare, for players to continue their careers much beyond their thirties, except for goalkeepers. Once thirty, they seriously had to think about retirement.

Maybe that had something to do with not as advanced sport medicine, or maybe the game was much more wearing and tearing on players bodies. I think, the game today is much less brutal and more policed by referees, compared to how it was back in the day. Today they'll stop the game when there's a drop of blood, back then bloody heads and noses were quite common.

Yeah it's a combination of advancements in medicine, nutrition and sports science, and better balls, pitches and boots, less thuggish football (though some bad stuff can still happen now, but relatively speaking).

I think it's also a mindset thing - a lot of players are much more serious about their careers and financial situation - back in the days lots of players ran out of money and had to open pubs post-retirement. Now players are determined to play as long as they can because the eyes of the world are on them and there's so much to gain financially and glory and spectacle wise from prolonging the career as long as possible.

Zbigniew Boniek, my Poland's GOAT footballer, Juve's and Roma's great libero in 1980s...(remember that position back in the day? Sort of a free electron floating on the pitch, jumping at opportunities.) said that when he retired at 31 or 32, his total capital cumulated from his career, would have last him only 4 years, and he was not frivolous in spending. He had to invest and mind what he did with the money. Today...all it it takes is one season on a bench at one of the 5 top Europe leages to be set for life.

Yeah I have heard of Boniek and vaguely remember him, he is a legend.

I think it was Beckenbauer who popularised the libero/sweeper role. Germany has a lot of history with it as he, Matthaus and Sammer, amongst others, have allplayed the role. Don't really remember enough of Boniek in it though. But I know from clips and reading that he's a legendary player.

Unfortunately a lot of people would ask 'who?' when asked about him when - as you say - he's arguably bigger Polish legend than Lewa.

Grzegorz Lato is another legend.

And of course the rest of your post is correct. It only takes one good contract now. Though a lot of players are morons and fritter away their cash these days.

If you say so kid. I was talking facts and running rings round players myself when you were still swimming in your dad's balls. I know players and events from football history you will never ever become aware of. Us agreeing on some football matters doesn't change that.

I was also making the same points months ago, long before you showed up piggybacking on my points.

Stick to listening to donkeys like Drake. Cheers wee lad.

Wait is this dummy actually roleplaying as Maradona.
