Alexis Sanchez

I wonder dies he dive because he lacks confidence. I think when he makes a mistake and loses the ball he dives/slips to make it look like he was not at fault. Perhaps it's a reaction to the enormous pressure and expectation that comes from playing with for such a great team.

So what? Every other Barca player is under enormous pressure, especially the youngsters, but you don't see Tello, Thiago, Montoya or whoever pulling this kind of shit on a weekly basis. It's unjustifiable, especially after almost two seasons.

He will leave next year if he doesn't drastically pick it up. His slump is like Ibra's except Ibra scored one in 5 chances at least.

so his confidence is the reason for his horrible finishing, bad first touch, bad technique, mediocre passing, slow thinking, big lack of tactical understanding? This guy is the complete opposite of what Barca needs in a player, how some ppl here can still defend him is beyond me.

Lol are you seriously comparing Ibra's slump to Alexis's? Ibra didn't even have a slump. He just simply didn't fit the Barca system. Besides, Ibra was enormous for our success in the league during the first half of that season. Also, Ibra only played for a season, as opposed to Alexis who has been here for 2 seasons.

Yes I compared it because I saw Ibra choke away dozens of chances he could of buried easily any other day. Plus Alexis is wearing the #9 shirt Ibra wore. Worth comparison ;)

"I left the penalty to Ibra because he needed to score to break his slump," shrugged Messi. "It was important for him and also for the team to see him scoring again."

he did have a slump with barca. i wouldn't put it at the seismic levels of alexis' slump, but was there and noticed by many. alexis on the other hand, needs to improve quickly because as a barca forward, you have to finish your chances.

true.... if we need someone with a superb workrate you hire someone how was made for this.. but if you hire a striker and he cant score this is a serious problem and if he cost so much money its a pitty too.....

he should consider himself a midfielder who is working only... i have never seen a striker who is so bad at finishing and getting even worse by looking on the ball all the time... i could live with that but there is an other problem too with alexis his slipping he is slipping all the time and slowing down the passing in front of goal although his image did cost him and barca many penaltys who would have been given if he wouldnt dive all the time in the past...

I just re-watched a compilation of Alexis vs Palermo when he scored the 4 goals and 3 things stood out to me.

1. Very high confidence in front of goal
2. Not afraid to take on defenders
3. Did not go down at the slightest touch. Very good balance actually.

If we could get even 50% of how good he was in that match, then he would score lots of goals and the team would be extraordinary.

He does drag defenders out of position but not as much as it may seem but his attacking runs are very good. However he isn't bringing anything really new as Pedro does all of this AND he links up very well and doesn't disrupt/slow down the buildup, and even chips in with some goals.

That's the point. I'm not defending him, I'm arguing that he doesn't have the self belief required to play at a club of barcas quality. The expectations may be too much for him. I wonder would ferguson take a risk on him, he was interested in him before he signed for us . It's hard to see us getting more than 12-18 million for him.

i would defend alexis more if its sure he only gets paid for what he should do as a striker... score... you dont buy something and expect it to be something else... someone who earns millions in a year should probably do his job like everyone else does.. bad work you get bad reponse that all....

There was a short sequence of play 10:54-11:10 in this match which for me summed up perfectly the difference between Alexis and Pedro. Pedro controls a headed pass from Pique perfectly and then performs an elegant little dribble to evade his marker and passes back to Pique. The ball is then passed across the pitch to Fabregas, who passes forward to Alexis, whose first touch is awkward and actually needs two touches to control the ball and then passes immediately back to Adriano.

Pedro's touches showed skill, technique, flair and an ability to retain possession under pressure whereas Alexis showed none of those in this example.

First of all he receives the ball with his back to goal rather than opening his body to face goalwards and receive the ball on the half-turn. He shows no awareness of where his marker is in relation to him. Had he been more aware of his surroundings then he would have known he had time to turn and run at the right back, who was exposed 1v1 with plenty of space for a quick winger to run in behind. Finally his pass back to Adriano is a simple 10 yard pass back to the full back, which achieves nothing.

Everyone can see that his finishing is awful, his first touch is consistently poor and he hardly ever dribbles past a defender but it's the little details that he doesn't seem to understand which says to me that he will never be Barca standard.

The 30 second youtube clip is an interesting one but a poster a couple of pages back commented that if all you wanted was work-rate and effort from the wingers then you might as well play the full backs there. Indeed I would prefer to see Alba LB and Adriano LW than Alexis in the team at the moment.

Right on, Well said. I see this all the time, him recieving balls with his back to the goal and showing no forward intent. It's just useless, ineffective and timid. Not at all up to the Barca standard. Not to say he's a terrible player, but he clearly can't handle the pressure of playing on this great team and it's probably because he doesn't have what it takes and he knows it. He probably COULD elevate himself to a suitable level but his own lack of self-belief might be limiting him. Who knows.

But the bottom line is the bottom line, when you subtract from the team far more than you add to it, you really have no place here and you should make room for someone who adds much more than they subtract.
