Xavi started as a defensively weak Cdm transformed into one of the best Cms ever.
Rakitic was a Cf and Amc turned into a workhorse Cm for our team.
Roberto was an allround midfielder, turned into a good RB, as it seems.
Mascherano was awesome Cdm, turned into a very good Cb for our team.
Marquez was a Cb who played as a Cdm for the whole season when we had injuries at Cdm for Edmilson and Motta (we even won a title).

There are lots of other good and bad examples.
These transformations don't always end bad.

I have read a few days ago that Halilovic will now play in his new team as a Cm and Acm, not as a winger anymore.
His new coach wants him to create from midfield and to have ball as much as possible.
It happens all the time.

But with Gomez the only thing of his that fits in DM is height,
the rest is all CM/AM material

Samper is not here this season so it's understandable Lucho wants to have some alternatives to Busquets as Masche and Roberto are still starters on other positions, Rakitić is probably too valuable in his current role to move him around (though he could fit in in Busquets role fine) and Gomes is currently a rotational player who Lucho wants to give as much minutes as possible so playing him as DM is just another way to get him on the field. We all know that Lucho likes versatile players. If this experiment of Gomes playing DM will happen it will in easier games and probably over the last 20-30 minutes when we have comfortable lead and Lucho will give some rest to Busi (OR play Gomes alongside Busi in "double pivot" if we play 4-2-3-1; we have players who can play different systems so Lucho won't always stick to 4-3-3, in fact, we already played 4-4-2 when Neymar was away). I doubt he'd play him there against RM, AM or in important CL games. If Busi is unavailable in those type of games Lucho will probably move Masche to DM as he has more faith in Mathieu/Umtiti at CB than Vidal at RB (I'd prefer Roberto over Masche as DM though).

If he becomes starter at RB, he won't have the time and energy to be a backup for Bus. That leaves Mascherano and Gomes. It is also possible we might move to 4-2-3-1 in near future, if Messi becomes slower with him as 10 and Bus and Gomes as double pivot.

Huh? you make it sound as if he'll be having to play RB n DM at the same time in a match. We have Masch, and he is more than capable of replacing Busi. Umtiti has shown he is capable of replacing Masch too. Gomes and Bob will rarely be used in the DM. As for Samper, I fully believe he will replace Busi one day, down the line as Gomes and Bob start to solidify thier place in the team and Masch leaves or retires he will be the only option.

Of course he has. He is moved to DM whenever Busi is out (very rarely). To claim that Roberto, the guy with the biggest engine in our team, doesnt have the energy to be a DM is absurd.

We are looking for a RB backup apparently. Masche is crap as DM for us. Roberto is superior to him and DM is arguably the most important position in our team (full-back is the least important I'd say).

Nah, he has played for years without any rest and done well so we are looking at 5 matches per season for any DM backup. Of course, if Gomes is primarily considered some type of Busi backup, he'll leave by the end of the season as that role means hardly any game time. The only one who has impressed as Busi's backup is of course Sergi Roberto. It is of course crucial that the DM is match fit as it is perhaps the most important position in our team. I do suspect Masche will be the DM though sadly, because of Lucho's love for him even if he sucks there.
