Gomes might be a good player for an average Spanish team (definitely not for Barca or the Portuguese NT) but in case it is true that Lucho was the one craving for him, he was out of his mind back then.
He represents the A-TYPICAL player who has nothing to do with Barca's style, approach or qualities. He is slow and all that but most importantly: highly predictable. And that's the main problem, because he won't be able to consume a "creativity liquid" and suddenly become someone else. The greatness of MSN is that in good form they are UNPREDICTABLE, so is Iniesta and that's what makes Barca Barca today!
Even Arda (whom I wholeheartedly dislike) is capable of some small quantity of this needed unpredictability, which could work sometimes if the a football-field was a quarter of its size. But the supposedly good Gomes is loosing on the physical side too, which makes him anything but someone to serve useful or creative balls to the MSN or do something useful in defense... (He is tall but looses each and every duel in the air...)
If you are a good observer you can see that he has almost NO facial expressions whatsoever, which is a good sign to identify a "motoric", "robotic" and uninteresting average player, who can perhaps only force himself to be getting involved...
Nice post.
