I feel like Rakitic "sacrificed" his playstyle. When i see him playing with Croatia he is way better, he looks sharp. But with us he has to cover the right side because Messi isn't defending (I don't blame him, he is Messi) and because our RB is pretty much a RW. When Alves was still there, he handled his defensive tasks quiet well so Rakitic could create more, with Roberto it's a little bit more complicated. Maybe this is why he doesn't look that good now. However he brings some sort of stability, specially against tough opponents when we have to go all out. I don't know if Gomes is willing to put that much effort to keep that stability or if he is experienced enough to even think about it.

I still maintain that Rakitic should be a CAM when the Don is not available with a defensive minded midfielder like Masch covering for the right side along with Busi in the midfield. I don't think we have tried that ever.

I want to see him as a CAM too, no defensive tasks (at least not as much as today), it could work if we get a defensive RB that won't attack that much. But it won't happen, Enrique seems to think that Rakitic isn't good anymore, he is going to slowly replace him with Gomes. This would be a huge mistake imo, but who knows... Gomes could turn out to be good. Now that i think about it : Roberto could be the perfect option for that position !

Gomz isnt gonna replace anyone.

Fabinho would be a great addition to our midfield and RB. He can play the same positions as Roberto and would basically be our new Yaya Toure, versatile, from Monaco, good in attack and defense.
