André Gomes

Tried to contribute offensively. I liked that he was calling for the ball around the box all the time, but he rarely received it. Looks like his teammates don't trust him. Was interested if he would be able to make something happen there.

His defensive work is horrible. Looks like he never learned how to attack an opponent as he handles them with kid gloves. Or he makes a foul instead. I have the impression that he could be much better if he would try harder, but nothing really changed in the last months. He doesn't look like he gives 100%.

He looked better when Granada left a tonne of space behind them and the game was becoming end-to-end for some 15-20 minutes in the 1st half. He had space to run with the ball and that's when he does well. He did that in Valencia. Might be the perfect player for a team like Liverpool.

When he runs with the ball, he isn't as slow as he seems, but he won't get that here. I don't really like Coutinho that much, but perhaps we could convince Liverpool to sell him for 30m + Gomes or something like that. Unlikely to happen, but just a thought.

Agreed.

What do you want him to say? "What a shit player we bought, I hope we can sell him for half the price this summer"?

No. He could say he's a good player who needs time. Not that he has "all the right attributes", "can play in many positions" and "can give us a lot", all of which he clearly hasn't or can do. Robert's comments on Gomes are pretty much on par with Zubi's about Vermaelen. He's trying to save face for wasting 35m on him, as Gomes isn't showing not even a glimpse of hope that he'll improve.

Think it's unfair to say he's not giving 100%. He does his best, but it's just not working out for him. The way we play just doesn't suit his best skills and he ends up looking confused.

Defensively he's not good and slow to react and ends up committing fouls which is why it may seem like he's not doing his best.

It's a sad situation for everyone.

Yea, I agree. I'm one of those who think he has plenty of qualities, but I think the persons who said he does not fit were right. I think players can get better adjusted with time, but the differences seem to be too big in this case. I'm not sure time alone can make Gomes work at Barcelona.

I think we (Lucho and Robert) went overboard with this 'versatility' thing. At the end of the day we still have a style we need to adhere to.

We have too many versatile players in the midfield right now, but we need more specialists. Rafinha, Denis and Gomes. Our three young players are either not proper CM or AMs or just have a skill-set that suit a different style of play, completely different to ours.

It's great to have versatility in the squad, but we've gone too far with it. Roberto and Rakitic are enough if we want players who can play different positions or want a bit bigger presence in the midfield.

True. Those are the most expensive though and it is very difficult to sign one of those players once they get to the big teams. Which is why we need to react quicker to the market. Once there is an opening for a specialist player you sign him.

Not signing Kroos was such a dumb move. If he was open for a move at Barcelona, you have to do it. You have to sign a player like that if he is available.

Think about it, what great CMs have been on the market and went for sums under their value? I'd say Kroos, Thiago (not a great midfielder at the time, but a talented one) and Arturo Vidal. And those went to our biggest european rivals.

Yep. Our transfer strategy been shoddy last few years when it came to the midfield. Perhaps we put too much trust, or blind trust in Denis, Rafinha and arguably even Halilovic and Samper that we failed to identify their capability and skill-set to secure our future in the midfield.

Think it was more of an over reliance on Messi saving us all the time. And they had a treble in 2015 to back up their thinking.

Its like our club does nothing until the end of the season and then sits down and says "right, what do we need"
But by then its way to late, all the good players have made deals with other clubs.
The players we have signed lately we havent really had any competition for, Neymar had a better offer from RM but choose us becouse of Messi.
Noone except us wanted Suarez after the WC incident. Umtiti and Ter Stegen we were pretty much fighting for alone.

Iniesta is still our best midfielder, but can only play 50% of the games. Thats really worrying.
