There is an official statement from the club that says it is mandatory.
So I have 2 questions:
1-Why people still believe reporters over official announcement (which has been transparent this year btw)

I just realized something: This guy legit did a lot of defensive work for us. Tracking back, helping the LB/RB. All over the pitch. I feel like his loss will be felt badly. Lot more pressure on our Segunda defense now. Holy hell are we in for a long ride if we expect Braith or Depay to be on defensive duties.

Defense is a lot more than "running back to defense" and actually more than simple act of defending.
Ability to keep the ball, ability to pressure the fullback and prevent him from running freely is as important.
Griezmann did neither of those, which allowed other teams to pressure us and exploits our right flank

1-no mention of a mandatory buy option in atletico's statement, and the weird way it was phrased in our statement makes it natural to be skeptical over

2-i don't know the reporter, but i've seen others online reporting similar:
