Ozil doesn't bring the spring, as an attacking midfielder he was unneeded even thought he is above Arsenal's current ones. This transfer happened mostly to just happen, Wenger to get someone and even better a big name so he finds redeption. They will improve by his qualities but Arsenal fans shouldn't imagine crazy things and significant improvement.

Well the pressure is on Arsenal to make sure they do better in the league than last season. Which is not a given, no matter the signing of Ozil.

But with that outlay comes pressure. The kind of pressure Wenger does not enjoy.

He's a great player, but Arsenal are essentially strengthening in the one place they needed to strengthen the least. They still don't have the quality CB or DM they needed.
And striker. They are a Giroud (who isnt even good enough himself to challenge for the title) injury away form playing Yaya "beast" Sanogo

They'd just play with Walcott as striker with Cazorla - Wilshere/Rosicky - Ozil behind him. At CB there's Mert, Kos, Verm and Sagna not that bad at all. Dm Arteta and Flamini and it was shown that a CM Wilshere and Ramsey pairing also works.

Walcott as stiker? How did that work out previously? We are talking about winning trophies not finishing 4th

Walcott has a lot in comon with Messi. Fast agile starting from the right as a 20 goals/assist man and transitioning to the middle to become a 50 goals/assist man.

(yes i'm trolling, but walcott upfront with his speed and that much creativity behind him isn't as bad as you make it seem)

I get a kick out of people trying to downplay this transfer, it's Mesut fucking Ozil playing under Wenger! Ah but it's not "what Arsenal needed".

Feels good man.

To buy a genuine star player in his primacy after years of selling them. We needed this. Arsenal needed to lay down a marker.

So excited. Too bad we have to wait 2 weeks to see him play :(

To challenge for the title more signings are needed but Arsenal can definitely pip Spurs now for 4th spot.

We would've got fourth regardless of Ozil coming or not. Ozil coming means we can challenge for the title.

Disagree. I think we're strong at both CB and DM positions. Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen and Sagna at CB. Flamini and Arteta DM. Very good options.

Arsenal only had the second best because United had won the league and lost a few goals at the end of the season, ie the 5-5 game at WBA.

Arsenal are also more suited playing away from home, it's at home they struggle defensively as shown against Aston Villa. Last season Arsenal conceded the most goals at home out of the top 7 and we're only 11th best overall defence at home!

Arsenal's run at the end of season seems to cover over the cracks with people especially Arsenal fans, let's not ignore many of the matches in that run in were dead rubbers for a few teams and the rest against the bottom clubs in the league last season.

Having a good defensive run against three relegated teams in Reading, QPR and Wigan, whilst teams like Swansea, Newcastle, WBA, Fulham and Man United who were on holiday attitude won't cover up the defensive errors from the first half of the season or that Arsenal badly needed to strength that position.

Arsenal have not fixed their problems from last season, have made one excellent signing and got rid of many players which was good business. However all the other clubs bar United have the potential to be stronger than they were last season IMO.

Sometimes I wonder if people even watch Arsenal play...

They HAD defensive problems in the beginning due to injuries, and a midfield with no balance. That was fixed after the loss against Spurs. After that, the fixtures have been very impressive;

Mar 13 FT Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal 66,000 Champions League (Round of 16)
Mar 16 FT Swansea City 0-2 Arsenal 20,583 Premier League
Mar 30 FT Arsenal 4-1 Reading 60,082 Premier League
Apr 6 FT West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Arsenal 26,144 Premier League
Apr 13 FT Arsenal 3-1 Norwich City 60,095 Premier League
Apr 16 FT Arsenal 0-0 Everton 60,071 Premier League
Apr 20 FT Fulham 0-1 Arsenal 25,700 Premier League
Apr 28 FT Arsenal 1-1 Manchester United 60,112 Premier League
May 4 FT Queens Park Rangers 0-1 Arsenal 18,178 Premier League
May 14 FT Arsenal 4-1 Wigan Athletic 60,068 Premier League
May 19 FT Newcastle United 0-1 Arsenal 52,354 Premier Leagu

-

2013/2014

Aug 17 FT Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa 60,003 Premier League
Aug 21 FT Fenerbahce 0-3 Arsenal 50,500 Champions League (Play-off round)
Aug 24 FT Fulham 1-3 Arsenal 25,622 Premier League
Aug 27 FT Arsenal 2-0 Fenerbahce 59,000 Champions League (Play-off round)
Sep 1 FT Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Let me guess, "United had won the league" and "Bayern had already gone through"?

The collapse against Villa was because Wenger got his tactics wrong. He decided to play a midfield without any defensive balance against a very agressive side.

Other than that, they have been very solid.

EDIT: Think about it, of all the prestige signings made in the premier league, in history, has there ever been one like this? I'm actually being serious. Many of the big names have been within the league, or players that have either declined or have been up and coming.

Özil, is from Real Madrid and he's about to enter his best years of his career.

Of course there has been better signings made, like Henry and Ronaldo but they were not as prestigious as this one. I can't think of anyone that tops this to be honest.

Overmars
Crespo
Veron
Desailly
Ballack
Klinsmann
Bergkamp
Yaya Toure
David Silva
Juan Mata

Off the top of my head. Ozil is in that category of course.

Veron had already started to decline, big name though. Yaya wasn't a consistent starter but ye, also a big signing. Bergkamp had a bad spell in Italy but he was also a big name signing. Crespo was also declining.

Mata, Silva etc are not even close Imo. Great signings though.

Ballack comes close. But nah, I honestly think Özil is the biggest one. Mainly because it's from Real Madrid and because he's had three fantastic seasons behind him.
