Either sign a close to WC or WC CB even if it costs a lot or don't sign anyone at all. We already have three project CBs now in our team. Don't need any more. Pau doesn't fit that since he's established himself in La Liga and more or less for Spain too, but I just simply don't rate him and willing to bet 50 bucks it's going to end up similarly as with Lenglet. On the look for someone better within 2-3 years.
Our problem is that we never try to go for a big signing in our defence. We pour hundreds of millions on misfits in midfield and attack, but god forbid if we ever try to sign someone that would improve our defence like van Dijk or Dias did for Liverpool and City.
This defence *need* a leader. It need someone who will immediately establish himself as the best CB in the team.
It does not need the copy of Clement Lenglet or Victor Lindelof.
I don't disagree with you but I still don't know who our potential VVD or Dias could be? Was Virgil close to WC before he signed for L'pool? I remember quite a lot of people saying they've overpaid for him. And don't know how many people rated Ruben Dias before last year and expected him to make immediate impact at City. I mean, Pep has bought what, 6-7 CBs for a combined close to 300m or something before he struck a gold with Dias.
We can't afford to do that but there are no proven WC CBs we could realistically sign so we'll eventually have to take a risk with someone if we want to at least have a chance to improve. Otherwise we can keep status quo and do nothing but hope that Araujo will stay fit and continue to improve and/or that Garcia will be as good as La Masia cultists believe he is.
I know you like MDL but he'd surely command a world record transfer fee for a CB if Juve would even consider selling (which I doubt). It's very unlikely we'd invest that much even in normal situation but now it's impossible. So who else do you think we should be looking at?
