If Masch is a Dmc from now on, then Mathieu is not a back-up but currently a first choice with Pique at Cbs.
There is a high chance that we will buy only one centre back. So, it's better to buy him than to play with Pique+Masch or Bartra.

Unless if people expect that Bartra will be our first choice?

What if all other "better" options are unavailable, like Silva, Hummels, Benatia and all other defenders which we wanted?

Again, it's better to overpay for him than to play with Pique-Masch/Bartra again.

Also, we will probably rather overpay him for 5-8 Millions and pay 20M for him, than to pay 50M for Marquinhos.
Because we probably have only 15-20M to spend, and not 50M.
So, there probably aren't any better and yet decent options.

Also, we have an attacking trio now which can win CL.
Even Mathieu could be decent enough to get a decent defense/team overall.

But we won't be able to do anything with a good-old Pique-Masch/Bartra defense.
We had enough of that one.

I like this ginger cvnt but I wouldn't be too sad if we sold him, especially for 20m. Look at it from a Barça fan's perspective and you wouldn't be too happy! Their defence has needed seeing to for years and they end up with Jeremy Mathieu! we could end up with a better replacement than him! He's fast and strong and a nice guy. But, he can be clumsy, lacks leadership qualities, he's nearly 31, ugly ginger and above all he actually wants to leave! Remember he's only got a season and a half of experience at CB and remember he has tendencies to have absolute stinker matches every so often. Jez is the one that will look stupid with the Valencia tattoo on his leg when Barça have had enough of him within 2 seasons, not us. If we hold out for the price we want we are getting far the better deal, just hope that R.Costa and co leave too!

Umm... we have a 120m budget. We spent 136 million and earned 79 million from sales. Meaning our net spend was 57 million. Meaning we have 63m (120-57) left excluding more sales.

I'd much rather splash 50-60m on Benatia than 20m + tax on Mathieu.

These days, defense is all about tactics, names don't really matter. Just look at Netherlands, Argentina, Costa Rica, etc. etc.

These are really true words.Tactics are really underrated when it comes to defense.Enrique can make our defence tight even with pique masch if he is that much of a tactician.We may get hummels or benatia but in the end defensive tactics will be the most important thing.Look at brazil.They have such an amazing defence but got humiliated with 10 goals in 2 matches.In the end its the upto the coach to make the defence strong.
