As far as I'm concerned Mascherano should stay as starting CB for at least 2 more seasons, said so before.
By then we can see if Tarin can make it or if there's something new in the market.

I'm with you on that one. As long as he feels up for it, and plays well, he should be first choice alongside Piqué. I have a nasty feeling that it'll be a terrible case of the grass is greener... whenever we replace Masch with some flashy new top name CB.

As someone already suggested, Gimenez could also be interesting. If he could be lured away from Atletico, that is. I'm guessing his buyout wouldn't be worse than Laporte or Mustafi?

If this article is correct, Gimenez's buyout clause is £33m.

So what about sponsorship issues? Will the budget remain unaffected?

Most of the sponshorship money from new deal with Qatar will probably go for new contracts for Neymar and Busquets. At least that's what I read.

We need a faster CB to compliment Pique. And with Stones aggressiveness we could mould him into interceptor like Mascherano.
Pique-Laporte playing in our high line would be a disaster.

Laporte is probably faster than Mascherano .he is really fast for a CB .from a physical standpoint the kid doesn't lack a single attribute for a perfect CB .good strength(though not gr8) ,height & quickness .
It is his lack of needed improvement with those tools over past couple of seasons along his insane buyout that make him crazy signing .

We will need a new CB this summer regardless Mascherano status .
Bartra seem to have one leg out of the club right now and the team need 5 CBs the way it is constructed since we have no other players who can play the position .but in fact the CBs are used to solve other positions (Mathieu LB & Mascherano CB)
Nevermind the fact that the remaining CBs are 29-33 years of age by the early part of next season . we need to get younger in the position .

We'll keep Mascherano around at least until his Contract expires or if he feels like he can't keep playing as a starter or even a squad player at a high level anymore and wants to go back home to Argentina. but this would be a perfect time to get a young CB to Groom and having Masche around he could be a good Mentor towards him.

I would not force the CB issue. Ideal would be to try and get connections to all possible targets for transfers either this or next summer. No matter if established young guys like Laporte or Marquinhos or players who fly under the radar like Romagnoli. Could also be guys that are not ready for Barca yet but could be in 2017.
Try to imagine and work out every possible deal with those players: pre contract, buy but let them stay at their club for another year etc.

Our main target should be a young but quality back up for the LB position (who is also able to play another position if necessary). No problem to splash a bit more cash on that and only start worrying about other positions if we have worked that out.

Perhaps you have confused them because they can be the same thing, a temporary solution.

No, you have them confused. And neither term is suitable for describing Mascherano. He is neither a fail-safe, nor a stop gap.

Mascherano has worked as a CB but this is neither his best position nor an ideal one for Barcelona, it has simply worked out for the most part despite being, in general, the weakest link in that defense

I disagree, and I think others have already posted about the importance of Masche.

Like I've already said, comparing a club legend who has played in more than 2 or 3 positions all over the pitch to a player who has yet to make his mark at any position is at the very least daft

I'm comparing our past success with two right-footed CBs to the idea of dismissing someone as not ideal just because we'd have two right-footed CBs. I'm not sure why you're having so much trouble understanding this, but there are many fantastic CB partnerships out there with two same-footed players. Marquinhos does fine when he has to use his left and he has played at both LCB and RCB. Dismissing him just because he's predominately right-footed is daft.

Danger Ahead
Every CB option has some flaw, I think we should look at the players with potential and go after Laporte or Stones anyway. Then give player time to adapt and grow into team and if he makes stupid mistakes now and then so be it. Stones kinda is my favorite because he has wonderful ball control and passing and we saw how important for Barca are CBs who can build from the back.

While I don't disagree with the man points,Romagnoli isn't flying under the radar tbf
He is playing with Milan and has just moved to them for 25M (and Roma has 30% of any future sale that cost more than that) and has been attracting interest from everywhere too
And again I think the need for a CB in the summer is mainly duo to Bartra expected departure .unless we get a LB who is comfortable playing as CB we need our 5 CBs as I mentioned few posts ago
