Mathieu is actually pretty decent on attack when at LB.
Anyway, does Vrsaljko look like he could add to his footballing "IQ" if he trains with Barca? He can hurl the ball right now yes, but Sassulo used to have Zaza, and Croatia NT has Mandzu, who are both good in the air, so hurling it in the middle is actually a decent option imo. Maybe it's the managers decision? And a fast, good tackling RB/LB is exactly what we need imo, the attacking part can be upgraded.
People from Croatia watched him since his early days.
When I talk about IQ (and I have seen that some people are pissed when some of us dismiss some players because of a low IQ), I personally haven't seen too many players who have improved significantly in that area.
Of course, your decisions improve over years, and if your footballing IQ was 30/100 aged 18, you can improve to 50/100 over years. But that is still not enough.
On the other hand, if someone has a natural footballing IQ let's say 70-80/100, then he will also improve, but to 90-100/100 level.
So, all players will more or less improve in all areas over time. Even in their footballing IQ.
But just like Pace, technique or some other skills=if you are born with insane pace or technique, you will only get better.
But if you are born very slow (like Rakitic, Fabregas etc), you will improve slightly over time, but you will never be as fast as average or as naturally extremely fast guys.
So, my personal opinion about naturally dumb players is that they will always remain more or less dumb (for Barca's level).
One more time, just an example what I consider as "dumb" players who don't have too much room to improve in that (IQ) area:
-- Alexis Sanchez and Alba from our players
-- or Adama and Halilovic from youngsters
Also, since I have already mentioned 2 "dumb" Croatian players, someone may get an impression that I hate Croatian players (from my country).
No.
Again, my personal opinion was always that the dumbest players from my country (in IQ and footballing IQ terms) were: Ivica Olic, Halilovic and Vrsaljko.
Sadly for my taste, we already have 1 out of those 3 in our team, and it seems that we are interested in another one.
One user mentioned on Neymar's topic that I say that every young player is dumb/with low footballing IQ.
Again, I have said (and that is only my personal opinion, and I could be proven horribly wrong...) that Adama and Halilovic have low IQ.
I don't think that Deulofeu, Lee, Samper, Munir, Alena or other guys have low IQ. They have other strengths and weaknesses.
Also, let's back to Vrsaljko, I don't think that he can improve in that area, or improve enough.
He played equally as dumb as on these videos both in Dinamo Zagreb, Croatian NT and now in Sassuolo.
So, as I have said, you can improve your footballing IQ from 30-ish out of 100 to 50-ish out of 100, over years.
But he will always more or less remain the same dummy who runs like crazy and then close his eyes, hurl the ball into the box and cross his fingers that his cross will "find" someone in the box.
My apologies if this theory pisses someone off, but my personal history of watching Barca and football in general over the last 25-ish years has created my "bad" opinion about players with low IQ and I have more or less zero faith in them (to achieve big things one day).
For the end, about Vrsaljko, I still think that he could be somewhat playable and useful here as some kind of a weaker version of Alba (you get his pace and tackling, but he is way worse in attack).
I wouldn't want to see Vrsaljko in our team against Bayern and Real, but in easy fixtures against Getafe, Levante, cup matches and similar, he wouldn't do any harm and we would be still winning 6:0 and similar.
But since we are Barca, I would like to see a slightly better back-up player than him.
