Guys, Gundogan is going to City for around 35-40 million euros. That's not unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination.
Maybe we should just cut our losses with Arda to give us more funds for a big MF but honestly, what we need most in MF is control, someone who can dominate and dictate the tempo for us. So in that regard, the only "big name" MF who I genuinely think would impact the team immediately is Gundogan or Veratti. Pogba would need some time to adapt here and he might not mesh the greatest with having a "pass first" mentality forced upon him. He at least wouldn't fit as a "tempo MF" as well as Gundogan or Veratti would, which is what we need the most in MF.
The problem with both Gundogan and Veratti though is both will be really difficult to get. Gundogan seems 80% a City player already and it would take a negotiating master class to steal him from Pep and we all know us and negotiating is just
Veratti is slightly more attainable but unless PSG are just having a fire sale this summer, I'd highly doubt they let us steal Marquinhos
and Veratti in the same window. And Marquinhos or any world class, young CB again is by far the top priority.
That's why we need to scout deeper and more creatively. We simply cannot afford a "galactico" transfer approach, so we need to focus on finding young players who have the profile and skill set to excel in the first team. For example, two MFs who I think exemplify the type of approach I'm talking about are players like Youri Tielemans or Riechedly Bazoer. Granted, they are both a bit raw still but they are definitely world class potential MFs. Like Bazoer could be the new Clarence Seedorf and we'd sign him for peanuts, 15-20 million tops. A player who could have been like that for us last year was Mateo Kovacic but Madrid signed him just for him to rot on the bench.
The difference between us and Madrid in this regard is Lucho knows how to rotate youth players to develop them and give them playing time, on top of how much we develop players naturally in training. Players like Tielemans or Bazoer would really excel in that type of environment because they are still so young and malleable to what we need. Both of them have the same skill set as Pogba, are younger, easer to train and adapt to our system not to mention almost 10x cheaper.
It continues to baffle me that we snipe talent from PL teams who criminally over evaluate their players yet turn a blind eye to clubs like Ajax, Porto, Dinamo Zagreb and Anderleicht who develop players in a similar style to us. We could have had talents like Suarez, Eriksen, Modric, James, Falcao, Kompany and Lukaku in the past few years if we had scouted youth talent in these areas.
To conclude, Alen Halilovic's transfer best exemplifies a good transfer for me, you could even include Ter Stegen as well. I'd much rather us gamble on younger players who won't cost us as much as big name, big money transfers like Pogba and Fabregas. I guess that's essentially what I'm afraid would happen to Pogba here, his transfer going like Fabregas.
