Montoya has not proved to be better than Dani Alves and has correctly been the back up.

Despite that he has played 34 times and started 17 games which is much more than most back up players would get.

He is playing and getting opportunities and needs to show more when given the chance.

With Athletic player Aymeric Laporte being Barcelona's first centre back option, Chelsea player David Luiz (27) is the main alternative [md]

 better pay Laporte's clause than get Luiz...

Yes, he definitely need to improve those aspects of his game, but remember, he will improve the more he plays. Not the more he stays on the bench or watches the matches from the stands or at home infront of his TV

Montoya got a lot of minutes early in the season and he did not repay that trust in kind. As opposed to Bartra who took his minutes and ran with them, Montoya did not impress when he was given the window to do so.

He has shown more than enough and should see more minutes. I dont know whether Tata is told who to play or blind.

Maybe Montoya doesnt approve his crossing tactics

Yeah it felt like Tata was giving a lot of player the opportunity to show what they could do in the first part of the season and from there he has seen the players and gone with his strongest line up.

Had Montoya performed better when given the chance he would have got more minutes.

More minutes? Why?

He has played in 35 games this season and started 17, that is more chances than most back up players will get to show what they can do. Especially in a position like full back.

Montoya has had ample opportunity to show what he can do and hasnt done enough to dislodge Alves.

Alves is better at attacking(Sometimes) and has experience on his side. But Alves has 2 assists this season the same number as Montoya I believe, and I don't think its an overreach to say that Montoya is better defensively. He deserves his 34 games with 17 starts if you ask me.

Edit: Actually I was wrong Montoya has 3 and alves has 3.

Alves link up play in the final third is on a different level to Montoya.

Montoya is not even close to being as good as Alves in the final third. He needs to improve massively on it.

At moment he is just a solid full back not brilliant defensively and not that great going forward.

In this Barca team as a full back you need to be able play virually as a winger like Alves or like Abidal be a full back that is comfortable covering at centre back.

Montoya is neither of those things so far.

Alves is a completely superior attacking fullback, no sometimes needed. As far as defense, Montoya stays back more than Alves this is true, but that doesn't mean better defending. Montoya got beat 1v1 A LOT this year. His defense was very disappointing, to me at least, who had higher hopes for his defensive game than what he showed.

Bottom line, Martino gave Montoya far more trust than any 4th fullback deserves in any big club (a lot of it due to injuries to be fair), and Montoya most certainly did not impress and he most certainly did not earn more minutes based on his play.

If people think his promise merits more minutes, that's another matter, but his play was decidedly unimpressive.

That's a nice comparison.

A bit surprised at Thiago Silva's poor tackling. Not surprised Hummels gets dribbled a lot, his lack of speed makes getting dribbled easier, but you see his superior discipline and positioning with his high clearances and low fouls number.

Laporte holds up very well for being so young.

Luiz shows why he should be last option.

Not saying Montoya deserves more but I think he certainly deserves the time he got. You know who deserves more? Bartra. He already seems to be better than Luiz

Is hoping for a transfer fee of around 15-20m far-fetched?
