I think it is a fact that Manchester United is a bigger club than Bayern, from the perspective of influence, fanbase and revenue etc.

"Influence"? LoL. Rummenigge may be a moron and a jerk, but at least he's probably one of the 5 most influential chairmen in European club football (Killer-"nepotism got me all my UEFA and ECA positions"-Kalle).
Fanbase, in Asia and America, yeah. But Bayern are going all in in those two continents atm and may be able to gain at least some ground.
Revenue? Yeah, by how much? 40M or something? So less than 10% more. What about profit, debt and ownership-status? Yeah, I thought so.

What a dickhead move. I was surprised to hear the same comment made by Kroos, but Schwein? Of all the players, him??? Fuck you.
(Though I can understand that his relationship to Killer-Kalle, Pep and Sammer may not have been the best anymore, but still pretty fucking classless. It's not like Bayern would say "We are lucky to get a better and younger player in Vidal over Schwein")

PS: Beats suck donkey balls and are little more than a marketing joke.

You're overreacting, what he said was purely contextual, considering the US tour and all of that USA related stuff. He's speaking about "bigger" as in more popular and more recognized globaly. United is bigger than Bayern at that. Hell, in US United is no1. He's not talking about history here, or trophies or value, but about marketability mostly.

Ok, so it was a quote taken out of context then. Adimttedly, I don't follow football as much atm as I used to, so I wasn't aware about the issue.

What's the big deal?
Isn't it today part of the procedure to say that the club you just went wo is the biggest and best and whatever club in the world?! Just like every player who comes to Barca has to say Messi is the best player.
They just want to grow in popularity.

Exactly. Pep said a year ago that Lahm is the most intelligent footballer he's worked with. So what?, it's normal to praise the team you're at and it's players. If he said United is better than Bayern after he left United, then yes, I'd understand the reaction from Bayern's fans.

Also, nothing wrong with stating facts. Man Utd are a bigger club than Bayern globally.

Ryu, we are talking about the club's overall influence in global football, not measuring the chairman's influence. Does anyone even know who the chairman or the president of Manchester United is? But who cares?

Not just in Asia and America, Ryu. If we can use social media as a gauge in kind of measuring the number of supporters and fans, Bayern does trail Manchester United by quite a bit.

40m or 10m or 5m or 1m, bigger is bigger, is it? And who cares about stuff like debt and ownership status? Probably only Bayern fans. ;)

At the end of the day football is played on the pitch and Bayern our streets ahead of us right now. Thats the only thing that matters when all is said and done.

Ok, so it was a quote taken out of context then. Adimttedly, I don't follow football as much atm as I used to, so I wasn't aware about the issue.

Bastian's English is awesome.

'I don't know at what age Beckenbauer moved to America,' he said. 'I am 30. It is a challenge for me to prove I can do it here. I had my knee trouble after the World Cup which was very intensive for me and I had a break at October.

'But I have a lot of experience in big matches and that is an advantage. I am confident I can adjust to the Premier League. My style of play is to control a game.

'You have to be smart in your brain and fast. For me it is very important to control a situation in defence. You can always score goals but you have to add stability in the defence.

'I had the chance to join United in 2010. I thought about what to do. There were opportunities. But my goal was always to win the Champions League with my club Bayern Munich. Now I am happy to be here.

'My brother is a huge Manchester United fan. He is a big Eric Cantona and Ryan Giggs fan. It was always a dream to be a Manchester United player.

'I saw the 1999 Champions League final between United and Bayern at home. My brother had the United jersey on and I had Bayern's. I didn't cry but my brother was very happy.

'I always followed the Premier League and we watched a lot of United games with my brother.'

'That is my goal for my time here, I want to win titles and this is what Manchester United is used to and I am the same. I cannot guarantee titles but I will guarantee that we will do everything to be successful in the season.

'I want to make a positive impact. I think I can contribute a lot to the team.

'In Germany we had two seasons when Borussia Dortmund were the champions twice in a row. I also remember the Champions league seasons before we won the Treble with Jupp Heynckes, once against Inter Milan in Madrid and in Munich against Chelsea.

'You learn a lot from these defeats and situations. It was a progress. It is the same at Manchester United. I know the club are looking forward to winning titles again and I am the same.

'They are the biggest club in the world and I am sure this team has the quality to win titles. He [Van Gaal] wants to have success and if he doesn't have success one season then he is more hungry.

'I know maybe sometimes he is not so easy but what I love is that he always wants the best. He wants to improve in every second. He is honest to you.

'This is why in Munich the fans and the team loved him so much. Of course at first it was a little bit different but the relationship grew and we loved him.'

'United are more popular around the world,' he said. 'There is a difference and I could see that. Bayern Munich is a big club but Manchester United is bigger.

'When we were in China people knew us but Bayern were not so big in America. Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were unbelievable players. You cannot compare yourself to them. It is impossible.

'Scholes especially I like him a lot and I have a lot of respect for what he did for United. It was not easy and always tough to play against United. I just want to add my quality to United's game.

'When I see what we do in practise and the quality we have I am sure we have the chance to win titles. I am convinced about that.'

It shouldn't even be an issue anyway since he didn't say that one club is greater than the other in terms of historical significance; it was all about marketing. Bayern fans just made themselves look bad with the hysterical response to the quote that, as it turned out, was twisted by the press after all.

Maybe you guys really deserve to have Pep after all

Bild: You played for Bayern for 17 years. You’ve played for Manchester Utd now for 5 weeks. How much does a Manchester United heart already beat in your chest?

Schweini: After the wonderful time in Munich, FCB will always be in my heart because I was allowed to write history with them. But for me, it’s now a new chapter in Manchester. I can already say after only a few weeks that I feel very connected with the club and its fans.

Bild: Why?

Schweini: For me, it was a big surprise how warmly and enthusiastically the fans welcomed me at the first league game against Tottenham at Old Trafford. The people were already on their feet screaming and applauding as I was warming up, before my substitution. I had goosebumps. This makes you hungry for more. After the game I thought to myself “I want to play another game in this stadium immediately. It is very fun to be here”.

Bild: Even though the English press joked after your first game that you had eaten too much sauerkraut?

Schweini: Although I don’t really like to eat sauerkraut, I did introduce myself here as “Kraut”, because that’s what people here call Germans for fun. The English have a special sense of humour. I also immediately experienced this in the changing rooms when I was carrying two plates of food. My colleagues asked me, “Basti, what time is it?” hoping that that I would raise my arm to look at my watch.

Bild: You are the first German player for Manchester United. Is this an honour or a burden?

Basti: Absolutely an honour. Before my transfer, I actually didn’t know that no German had played here before.

Bild: The expectations are immense. You are arriving as a World Champion, so many Manchester United fans are hoping that through you they can finally win a title again.

Basti: I can’t say that “I have signed for 3 years, so now we will be champions three times”. The premier league is very difficult. Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have lots of quality. But those who know me know that I always want to win titles. And I think that Manchester United is a team which can win titles.

Bild: International titles too?

Basti: I am convinced that under Louis van Gaal, it is possible to start a new era with Manchester United, just like the days with FC Bayern. That is the attraction for me. I can promise that I will give everything and use my experience to try and get Manchester United to the level of Real Madrid, Barcelona and FC Bayern internationally.

Bild: You mention that you also trained under Louis van Gaal in Munich. How did he greet you?

Basti: He said “hello”, nothing more actually. He has his own very, very direct style. He is a general with a very, very big heart.

Bild: How much of an influence did he have in your decision to move to Enland?

Basti: When one knows what makes a manager tick and how he likes football to be played, it makes the decision easier, but I came here primarily because of Manchester United. Naturally the fact that the manager is such a good fit is perfect.

Bild: And [it must be nice that] you can speak with him in German.

Basti: This may sound funny, but we mainly talk to each other in English, even privately. Instead of ‘Trainer’, I now call him ‘manager’, which is how the coach is referred to in England. We only change to German on a few exceptions.

Bild: Has he asked you (in English or German!) if you can convince Thomas Mueller to join you at Manchester United?

Basti: No, the manager hasn’t spoken to me at all about Thomas.

Bild: He also made sure that you can have the number 31 shirt, which Fellaini wore last season.

Basti: I was surprised that the manager decided to do that. I did not expect it. I wore number 31 for my first professional game for FC Bayern and now also for my first competitive match here. That gives me a good feeling.

Bild: Are you already dreaming of a Champion’s League victory over FC Bayern?

Basti: I play for Manchester United now. It could happen in the 3 years I’m here that we meet in the Champion’s League. That would be a very good battle.

Bild: Maybe already in the coming group stages…

Basti: If it happens, it happens. But we must qualify first.

Bild: That also applies for Euro 2016. To what extent has this thought affected your decision to move?

Basti: Euro 2016 is very important for me. To have a big new challenge with Manchester United in front of me now could have a good effect on me. I am convinced that through my experience with Manchester United, I can become stronger and more valuable for Germany.
New interview, still cant believe he is playing for us.
