As I said before, this worked when done. It's just a good tactical variation to have. Messi - Cesc duo worked against rm this year.

Messi happened... As said before, you can't really expect Cesc or anybody else to do what Messi does... Messi can work magic like very few players in history, Cesc is "just" a great player, what did you expect?

Rest assured that if Messi was healthy he should have started over Cesc, but no such luck, so Cesc did what he could...

Cesc left a lot to be desired but he's not a false 9 and it's not his fault they play him there. Lets not forget that Villa and Pedro made 0 runs behind their defensive line and seemed almost afraid to get into the box. The front line in general seemed harmless, Iniesta is just world-class enough to force them to get involved.

It seems to me that false #9 is actually Cesc's best role, especially when there's a striker in front. He had that tonight (although as you mentioned, no runs, no one to pass to), but his performance wasn't very good. Still not his "fault", though. It would be absurd to expect him to do what Messi does.
