United are not like Barca and Arsenal, they don't like to put a team to the sword, they just play it out until the whistle blows.

Maybe we don't like embarrassing teams.

Or, more realistically, we never do any more than is needed to win. It's all about conservation of energy in long seasons like this, something which Arsenal have struggled with in recent years.

Also, tell me, what good teams have Arsenal put to the sword in the past couple of seasons? I can't remember many.

Yeah, Rio's been very good with his heading, he only gave the ball away once as well. Ronaldinho's been ok though at times invisible, thiago silva's been good, pirlo grew into the game. Huntelaar went close initially and it could have changed everything. Now that United are through it's just turned into a ridiculous bore draw (well, bore win) - United are not like Barca and Arsenal, they don't like to put a team to the sword, they just play it out until the whistle blows.

they can put teams to the sword, but they've adopted a very italian approach since they got battered 0-3 in sansa back in 06/07. I remember the QF from that year where they annihilated roma 7-1. they don't do that anymore, which is a shame coz they have it in their locker.

Even though Arsenal won 5-0 yesterday, they didn't dominate the display. It was just Porto who were shit at defending and Arshavin+Nasri on playing mood. They made many many mistakes defensively, especially Sol.

Fully agreed. It's just not in their mentality, it's not their approach to football.

   Pathetic excuse!!!! WAHAHHA!!! Are you being all humanitarian now?? Why don't you get a unicef sponsorship too?

I never said Arsenal put good teams to the sword, they still do it though - once they assert themselves in a match they don't stop. United are far too defensive and cautious, and as Meta said, Italian in style. They are extremely potent at grinding results out, massive team spirit, but it's not fireworks.

Of course you didn't need to do more than score a goal, you could've played for a 0-0 too couldn't you? But as we all know, 99% of football teams don't have that sort of an approach. There are a few - like the old Arsenal, or Greece 2004.

Yeah Porto were bad defensively, and i hate Arsenal, but Arsenal dominated the whole match statistically, Porto must have had 2 shots on goal at most. If it weren't for Helton the match would have been 8-0.

Yeah spot on, and 2 of Arsenals goals were offside(Bendtners first, which was blatent, and his second which can be discussed).

Yeah...that was tongue in cheek. Did you not read the second line?

The approach under Ferguson wasn't always this defensive, in the 90s and to a lesser extent the early 00s the mentality was always to score one more than the opposition. But Ferguson wasn't happy with the mixed results this approach brought in Europe, and he always felt the team should have won at least another European cup. So you could say that we changed styles to become more consistent. Yeah sure it's not always great to watch but you can't argue with the results in recent years.

Definitely, I agree with what you're saying. That a) the approach wasn't always like this. I mean, I remember the Roma match, and that was just one of many!!!
and b) This gets you the results, because United are definitely the top 3 of all teams in the world every single year.
No debating that.

It's just not always so nice to watch. You did just get a second goal which was nice to see, but it wasn't because United have so much attacking intent, but because the Milan defenders had a horrible f*** up. I wonder what the end result of this match will be though.

It's more the fact that Manchester won't concede that is impressive, rather than anything they do in attack. It's all about the counter, which i don't enjoy so much, but defensively, it's just impeccable.
