Who exactly would you have dropped from the squad list to make room for Tello? These were the options on the bench:

Pinto (obviously 2nd goalkeeper needed)
Alves (in case Alba or Adriano get injured)
Mascherano (in case a CB gets injured, which happened)
Song (in case Busquets gets injured)
Thiago (backup CM)
Alexis (backup winger)
Villa (backup winger)

Alexis was coming off an injury and Villa would be the only one off the bench, should one of them pull up in warmups etc., who could provide attacking forward play?...No one

And how often is Tello left out of the squad, rarely

When all were fit and we didn't play Copa, Tito was rotating. I imagine he will continue to do so next year too and that we won't se any certain starters up front except Messi.

According to EMD, Tello will sign his new contract this monday. It'll last until 2016.

Sadly it's true. This means that he's gonna see what happens in the reminder of the season and if doesn't get enough minutes, he'll easily leave.
