I think Ronaldo's talent is underrated, you cant take a kid who cant play football well and say "hey train non stop and you will become the best player in the world", doesnt work that way.
He was always going to be a quality player, his hard work just made him a much better one and keeps him on that level.
Same way its Messi's hard work that gets underrated, as if he just sits around the house all day eating pizza and playing fifa cause he is so gifted that everything comes natural to him.

There have been many hard working players by the way that were training monsters (e.g. Kuyt or Nedved) but they arent nearly as credited for it as cr7 who seems to be the embodiment of hard work and dedication nowadays.

I honestly cannot believe some people are claiming that the difference between the two is not that big. The only reason why there was ever a discussion about whether Messi is better at all, or about how small the difference is between the two, is because the media created it, in order to generate a comparison and a rivalry (later additionally fueled by the fact that they play in the same league for rival clubs) - which feeds news columns and every other form of sports-related communication worldwide, 365 days a year. In reality, Ronaldo is nowhere near Messi. Take a look at the previous 5 seasons and try to come up with an explanation how these two are at the same level. It's clear that one of them continually has better results than the other, and leaves a better overall impression to boot, so where is all this bullshit coming from? Obviously 2013 is an exception because Messi was injured, but normally, there's no question about it, and even the numbers, which Ronaldo fans like to abuse so much in his favour now, prove it. But if the media and the people started behaving that way, there'd be no major football topic that intertwines with basically everything football-related, nothing to argue about, no intense rivalry on personal and club levels - which is not good for business. It's actually funny and kind of pathetic how Ronaldo is being artificially inflated just to be comparable to Messi.

Yup, excellent point. I've always said this, the hilarious irony with this Messi-Ronaldo "rivalry" is that Ronaldo should thank Messi because he (Ronaldo) is being continually inflated ability wise just so that there is some form of comparison between the two. He hasn't merited that comparison since he's moved to La liga in what is supposedly his prime. He's been bested statistically in terms of goals and assists, not to mention the disparity between the teams they spearhead-trophy wise is laughable.

I keep hearing he's a "bargain" for Madrid, yet a paltry 1 league title in 4 years (likely to be 5) is all Madrid can muster from their "Bargain" in what is supposedly the best squad in the world ™
For me, in the midst of the pathetic media campaign to spur some sort of comparison, they subconsciously expose themselves without knowing because:

Messi is usually compared to Maradona
Ronaldo is ALWAYS compared to Messi

Which says it all really.

Some people? From my experience most people are claiming this, unless you are on Barca forums. Of course, Messi is the best player in the world, but CR is the only player comparable to him.

Looking at CR7 playing against Espanyol, you can see it is night and day between him and Messi. He relies on brute force, power and tireless running, taking every shot if possible. Twisting and turning, techniques, vision etc. are almost non-existent.

Messi last season; 75 goals from 254 shots.
CR last season; 62 goals from 435(!) shots.

He is a great player indeed, but his amount of attempted shots is just ridiculous.
