Breaking a 40 year old record had an obvious impact. It wasn't an ordinary record, no wonder it lasted so long. Doubt we'll see anyone scoring 91 goals in one year any time soon.

I was just pointing his goals weren't meaningless as you stated. What made Messi win the bdor that year were his record of 91, his performances with Argentina(helped them qualify as 1st place, not thru play-offs), and for having at least the cdr to show for. cr's win in 2013 happened thanks to a corrupted move with the reonpening of votes, something that had never ever happened before.

So, except for the "glorious" cdr, you guys are justifying 2012 ballon dor on the fact that he had better numbers than Ronaldo, despite Ronaldo winning the bigger trophy. Next year Ronaldo won the ballon dor with less trophies and better numbers than Messi, but that was a "scandal". I dont get this. Its almost the same scenario, just backwards.
