Cristiano Ronaldo - v1

Let's be real, Robben it's not even on the race, should he be considered? Yes, of course. Bayern played so well as a team that you could choose some of them to win it, but it's already chosen and already won European Footballer of the Year. We all know the ones that could win it, the three all media is talking about: Ribery, CR and Messi. So, forget about Robben. Let's talk about the ones that will probably be the finalists.

Ribbery is not an average player, he is a skillfull one and performed well all year, he's obviously not as good as CR or Messi, but the treble success gives him the extra points he needs. And remember he played very well against Barcelona (Messi), meaning more extra points to him. In the end, all i'm saying is, if he wins it, I wouldn't think is undeserved.

If Messi wins it, it wouldn't be a surprise at all, because it's Messi, he is special, the kind of player that keeps you on the edge of your seat on a daily basis, plus he scored tons of goals; 60 and 16 assists last season. Broke i don't know how many records. He doesn't need to win trebles to be considered the best. And if we're talking about Messi under the Guardiola's system, he was a monster those 4 years (4 ballons d'or). But still, I think that injury at the end of the last season could hurt him in the voting. Why? Because as I said before, he didn't played well against Bayern, and Ribery did play well those matches. That 7-0 is going to be in the mind of people voting.

Finally, if Cristiano wins it, it would be a surprise to me. Because... is he better than ribbery? YES!!! better than messi? NO. He scored lots of goals; 55 and 12 assists. But Messi scored more and he is not the kind of special player Messi is. His strongest attribute is that he scores for fun, that's why, when you want to show how good CR is, you need to talk about statistics. And talking about statistics, whatever Ribery did last season Cristiano did better, but whatever CR did last season Messi did better, and CR won no trophies at all, and he needs to win trophies to win the ballon d'or against Messi, in order to get those extra points that Messi already have for being special.

IMHO, Ribery will win it, maybe Messi, but no Cristiano.

Winning the treble and reaching the world cup final hasn't given Snejder the points to even be in the top 3. And again, check the numbers from the last few years. It would take someone truley outstanding to beat Messi, Ribery isn't even clearly outstanding compared to his teammates. Whom the media talk about is no indication, as they know as much as we do. And I know some media representatives who are eligible to vote and rated Lahm higher than Ribery.

As i said, you couldn't compete against Messi under pep's system, he was a monster. And the other two places were taken by xavi and iniesta, also word cup finalist and winners. I will check those lists.

Although Milito scored some very important goals, Sneijder was simply the main man at Inter that year. Besides that he also led the Dutch NT to the finals of the World Cup that year, Milito didn't. If anyone deserved to win that based on prizes won, Sneijder should've gotten it.

Can't compare the Sneijder situation to Ribery's.

There's no world cup this year.
Messi is nowhere, I mean nowhere as awesome as he was in 2010. Messi is a very boring player now, almost ordinary when you compare him to 3 years ago. He had a lot of variety and was a lot more spectacular, garnering a lot of brownie points...
Messi wasn't injured in 2010.
Bayern's treble is completely different to Inter's. Bayern have demolished every team in their path and the statistics back them up. They broke the points record, the goals scored record and the goals conceded record in Bundesliga. They pounded Barcelona 7-0, with Ribery playing really well, while inter scraped through 3-2 on aggregate. More importantly, their form hasn't gone south when their coach left, unlike what happened to Inter with Mourinho. Same situation with Ribery and Sneijder individually.

The only thing that is against Ribery is that his teammates will steal his votes. Considering that he was the European footballer of the year and the hype that he got with it, it may be enough to get him the ballon this year.

Implying that Messi won the last four because he had better stats than Ronaldo?

Messi won last year because Ronaldo's stats dropped off from August to November 2012 and because Messi was easily on track to break the world record for goals.

So yes stats do matter, but only because of the hype that goes along with certain stats.

According to whoscored, the performance of top players in the world in 2013, purely from the individual athletical/performance perspective, regardless of other factors such as team achievement, reputation etc.

Messi is the undisputed No.1.
