Daniel Alves

Good to hear the appreciation of Alves. I appreciate him more now that we have gone through a stretch with Montoya in that spot.

First of all, Dani does not play a primarily defensive position on this team. He is right wing back, which is primarily an offensive job. He is more offensive than any other "right back" in the world, thank goodness. That emphasis is crucial to the Barca style of play. So many posters on this forum seem to want Barca to convert to old-time Premier League football. Barca will never do that.

His main job is to bring the ball up the field, and he is incredibly good at this. Not just blindly boot it a long way, maintain controlled possession all the way into the attacking third, Barca style. Dani must be open more than any FB in the world. His teammates want to pass him the ball. He progresses it upfield extremely well with his dribbing and passing. Adriano is good at this, though certainly not as good as Alves. Montoya is less fluid, he is more like a normal fullback. When Montoya plays, Busquets and Xavi have to do more of the bringing the ball up. Bringing the ball upfield with very rare turnovers is critical to Barca, we know these turnovers in the defensive and midfield areas lead to many opposition goals due to Barca keeping so few players back.
