Of course his wages have a lot to do with it and how much they will be desperate to get rid of him. To the extent it will be the main reason that he has gone to Atletico for such a low fee.

No they don't. It's a bullshit theory made up to camouflage the complete incompetence of the people running the club and anyone with half a brain can see through it.

What theory?

It is clear the fee is influenced by the potential wages next season on a player that is not needed.

Dude MLS should have bought Villa. At least they would have paid 15-20M

It seems like he wanted Champions League football. Spurs or Liverpool would have paid double what he went for no problem.

Yes, his wages made the club want to get rid of him, but they weren't forced to sell him for such a ridiculously low fee. That's why they're incompetent. They're like children who get scared and then they'll do whatever it takes just to make sure they don't screw up. That's bad business and you don't want to have such incompetent cowards running a huge club like Barcelona. Villa is not a 5M player and he shouldn't have been sold for so little. But the worst part is saying this is actually a 16M transfer, because it's not. By that logic, Neymar's transfer is 85 million, if the rumours about him having 7M a year in wages are true.

Henry:
Bought: €24m(2007), Sold: €1.5m(2010)

Zlatan:
Bought: €65m(2009). Sold: €22m(2010)

Villa:
Bought: €40m(2010). Sold: €5m(2013)

This is just f*cking sad! And add to this Chygrynskiy, Caceres, Keirrson and the moneyz we never got (and never will get) for Bojan, Cuenca, Affelay and the shity cash we will get for Thiago, and probably Valdez on a free transfer while we buy a keeper for +30M, the money we never got for Abi, what happended to Henrique and Hleb?...

Stric, imagine you're the manager of the club. You get one offer for Villa, from Atletico. They say, "We'll buy Villa for these terms. Take it or leave it."

You talk to Villa about this, and he says, "Yeah, sounds great. I'd love to go to Atletico, I really wanted to stay in Spain and probably wouldn't accept offers to go to the Spurs or Arsenal."

What do you do? Keep a 32-year-old who wants a starting role and eats up 8 million in wages? Even though Messi, Neymar, and Pedro/Sanchez (please, guys, Villa shouldn't start on the right wing) will all start ahead of him?

They have been influenced by the fact he appears to want CL football and has a preference for staying in Spain.

If that is the case the choice is going with how much Atletico can afford to pay and the fee on top of that.

Clubs dont just think of transfer fees the wages is a massive part of it and considered just as much.

Villa is not a 11m euro a year player. AFAIK, only Messi, Ronaldo and Eto in Russia make more than that. Villa with his age and injury history is a 4.5m euro a year player. We would have received around 12m euros for him if he had been on an appropriate wage and not the inflated Laporta wage. And that is effectively what we got. 6.5m in excess wages and 5m in transfer fee. A soon to be 32 year old with 9 months left on his contract wont fetch more than that, no matter how good.

That would be a good point, if it wasn't completely based on several conditions that you've posed to fit your argument entirely. It is is purely speculation and personal preference. For example, it's only speculation that he wouldn't accept any other offers. It's personal opinion and preference that he wouldn't start ahead of Pedro or Sanchez, or that he couldn't play on the right (or in some other way next to Neymar and Messi). I find it very very hard to believe that there would be no other option to sell Villa other than to Atletico for 2.1 (+2+1) million. Villa is a top class player.

Tottenham and Fiorentina made better offers, of 3-4M, for David Villa, but Barcelona respected the wish of the player to join Atletico. [cr]

Villa was a top class player and he would be behind Neymar. Paying 11m in wages for a sub would not suit the club or player.

His preference from the options available seems to be Atletico who in reality cannot afford to pay much more than that as a fee considering the wages they will be giving him.It is not far off double what Falcao was on.

What do you suggest the club should have done?

Can anyone point to a recent player that gained in value at barca and was sold? They waste more money in transfer fee losses than most of the the other clubs have in their entire budgets.

Except for the fact that all last season Pedro and Sanchez were picked ahead of him? What makes you think anything will change this time around, especially with your sceptical attitude toward Tito?

For example, it's only speculation that he wouldn't accept any other offers.

Villa is leaving us for playing time (that's the only thing he's really lacking at Barca) but at the same time would want top level CL football. Who offers that? None of the British teams, really; Arsenal have Giroud and Podolski and Walcott, and are maybe looking for Higuain, Chelsea have Lukaku, Ba, Torres, United and City are full... The Spurs, though they do need a striker, aren't playing in the CL. I think Villa wants to play in the World Cup, and doesn't think the Spurs offer enough for him to go there. Where else could he go?
