Erling Haaland

Dortmund are setting there price to negotiate from.

You can either offer 180m for him now (whatever is their lowest acceptable offer), or 75m in a year where you will have more competition.

When you factor in Raiola's cut and that Dortmund will also have to reinvest in replacing Haaland (and who is there with potential bar maybe Patson?) Then it is not all that simple.

Add to that the fact that more competition on the player = higher wages required. If you're the only team in position to sign him this year, instead of one of 10 teams paying the clause next year, you won't have to outbid everyone on his salary. On a 5 years contract, that could make a pretty big difference.

180m isn't that crazy. Players with one year left on their contract still go for pretty big fees, so Haaland's price wont be too cheap just because his release clause is 75m next summer.

The thing with Haalands worth to Dortmund is that objectively they do not have the quality in the squad for close to guaranteed CL qualification. And when you take Haaland outv of the mix, then they might individually not even be a top 4 team in Germany anymore. Potentially missing out on CL qualification is not just depreiving them off the 30m initial UEFA payment, but it also affects further price money, valuable sponsorship agreements, TV money and of course the quality of players Dortmund is able to attract on the market.

Dortmund is heavily dependent on making the CL each year, as missing out on that throws them multiple years back in their growth. And now they are already struggling WITH Haaland who is likely the only player that can still get them there, so it's hard to imagine them reaching it without him.

That is true and a valid point. It's crucial for Dortmund to remain a CL tier team and worth, long-term, more than anything they could get for the transfer. I don't really follow the situation closely but thought they'd be able to strengthen weak points with that kind of money. And never saw the threat of them missing on the CL real.

But then again, I don't follow much.

Dortmund are great at recruiting attacking talent and some midfield talent, but their defensive recruitment have been awful for a long time now.

Their defence is more often than not below par or mediocre.

Probably find it easier to make the big bucks selling attackers.

The last decent defender who came out of there was Hummels? And he went for free

That's how I see it too. Additional 70ish m could help them strengthen certain positions and they never fail to come up with talented attackers.

That is, if they finally decide to show some ambition.

Imagine even thinking about signing Andre fucking Silva for 40m.

Poor Man's Paco Alcacer.
