Of course it is revenue, football is an industry that is for profit and everyone is looking for bigger pay day. Everyone involved benefits from more teams.
The new format while dilute the level, it makes group stage more exciting and games more meaningful, and usually what happens is teams eventually step up.
Same for WC, we didn't stop hearing how 32 team sucks and 24 teams are great, but recent WC was as good as it gets and it was clear that time for growth is near. We will likely suffer from low level in 2026 and probably another WC or two, but teams will eventually catch up.

No, it isn't at all. SA have less countries, but their level is far above the common average of European NTs. And evel weakest teams like Bolivia, Venezuela or Peru would smash likes of San Marino, Latvia or even next tier teams like Bulgaria, Moldova, Armenia etc.
Will Peru beat Latvia? Yes. But Copa would do the same if they had more countries available. Also, despite being a more compressed competition, Copa still has one sided matches in the group stage, just like the Euros.

Why is the Copa product so awful to watch as compared to the Euros? Absolute snoozefest. Even the quarters evoke zero excitement.

Euros were much more fun to watch with tighter format, because top teams were already fighting among themselves in group stages and stakes were high. There were lot more drama, when likes of Italy or Spain didn't get second place and were eliminated. Now it's virtually impossible and group stage matches between powerhouses are only formality for establishing who will play with whom in playoffs. Most matches are shit borefests, because too many shit teams.
Yes it was a better watch before but it's still much more entertaining to watch than the Copa. Very few matches are boring. Even neutrals here enjoy the group stage games.

This is a Barcelona Forum yet many people here enjoyed the Portugal vs Czech and Romania vs Ukraine games despite not caring for any of these National Teams. Look at the thread activity.

The same goes with world cups and i hear they want to expand everything even more. Why don't we just abolish qualification and don't let every team play in one big tournament? Ah yes, revenue.

Agreed. World Cup shouldn't be expanded.

There's obviously the money factor which is what it is with UEFA and FIFA, but I think there are a lot of Scots, Georgians, Albanians etc are having a great time in Germany despite their teams losing/aren't expected to win.

Euro is a sort of festival and for match going fans it's a wonderful time, despite being on the losing side. For that I think current format is fine. Yeah many matches are crap and people don't care but all in all compared to former format it's just one more game for the teams advancing.

Euro 2016 in France and Copa 2016 in USA had almost identical avg attendance per game (47k vs 46k).

It's just that the timing fits Europeans better compared to Copa. I'm sure there will be people here watching non-Argentina games as well.

The level at Copa is not better than the Euros, arguably the only top team there is Argentina, Brazil has declined, Chile has declined, i guess Uruguay is decent.

Copa games are awful and boring to watch. Trash tournament. Even the quarters aren't a good watch.

Euros is levels above with numerous big teams and players, elite presentation and much more organic buzz.

How can you generate real excitement for a tournament with 2 big teams which gets organised 4 times in 6 years.....?

Teams from South America outside of Brazil & Argentina, play on equal footing with European big teams all the time at the world cup.

Copa is equal to euros.

Euros is more popular because it's in Europe and more accessible to more people across the world.

Only issue the copa has,is there is too much of them recently, they gotta chill with that.

Saudi defeated Argentina and Cameroon defeated Brazil in the WC. Uruguay lost to Portugal and couldn't beat Korea. Means fuckall.

Before Argentina won in the 2022 edition, European teams won every edition all the way back to 2002 when Brazil won.

Copa have 3 big teams Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay.

Euros have numerous big teams with popular players: Germany, France, Italy, England, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, etc.

Copa being equal to Euros is the biggest joke ever.

Euros are much tougher to win and way more exciting.

Europe also has more shit teams, difference between having a continent with 100 countries & another with 10.

You're welcome
Football a bit poorer in Copa aye, but a known hallmark is that refs don’t whistle at every opportunity a player trips over his own laces. Matches can also get heated due to rivalry.

Most boring thing I watched was the euro when portugal won where every team played to win 1-0

A tournament is only as difficult as the run you get and the standard of opposition in that particular timeframe.

I don't think the last 2 Euros were full of incredible teams. An average Italy were able to win it. a 3rd place 0% win rate in the groups Portugal were able to win it the time before that, all whilst avoiding every top team mentioned above until the final. Portugal did well to hold off hosts in the final and get a wonderstrike from Eder, beating a top team who are hosts of a tournament is always tough.

Same for copa win recently, don't think the Argentina run was difficult, beating Brazil at the Maracana was huge though.

Euros are anything but boring. People in this thread itself were enjoying the Portugal game so much. And most of those people don't give a flying fuck about Portugal and hate Cristiano so.........
