there's a big difference in being a very good defender in a side that gets pounded every week, and in a side that pounds teams every week because when you're getting pounded, you have at least 7 other players defending with you. smaller teams like Newcastle, West Brom, Mallorca, Osasuna always play in defence against bigger teams leaving the attacking midfielders and forwards doing the offensive duties.
in the big horses, like Arsenal Barcelona, Man utd, Chelsea, there are fewer players ready to defend when it's time to defend because most of the attacks they have against them are counterattacks. therefore, we can draw the conclusion that it's much harder to be a defender at a top side then the reverse. who were the CBs from lesser sides that played for England in the WC and were shit?
