Looks like this one's nailed on...a substitute left back is hardly the stuff that dreams are made of though.

he'll get in there ahead of abidal.

all he has to be able to do is cross competently and he'll be a more useful player for the team. abidal's only good at one thing and he's so bad at everything else there really is little point to him.

I don't know if he'll be picked ahead of Abidal, he probably will. Anyway, I agree with you, Abidal is good on the cover, he's a good athlete. Other than that, he's fuckall use.

Except the "one" good thing that Abidal is good at is exactly the one thing we need when we have Dani on the right. You guys are dreaming if you think Bilal will be on the bench. Filipe? Just hope its not another Caceres case.

Really? That should be usefull against CR eh?

I also agree. With only one defensive mid, and a very attacking RB, there are sometimes not a whole lot of players back defending the counter-attack. Abidal sometimes is almost like a left-sided CB than a LB, and i think this role is very useful in our otherwise very attacking team....Having said that, it's useful to have a more attacking LB as another option. For instance when Iniesta was out, I think we could have used a little more creativity on that left side.

Filipe is very good defensively aswell. I think alot of people are writing that side of his game off. He is much more rounded a player than Sylvinho was and Abidal is.

and what was the score and performance against Barca ?
He is not that much defensively Jerk-off is better even though he is a pure attacking LB.. remember Depor play 5-3-2..... he is good going forward but a suspect @ the back...

Zhirkov is a winger though Beast...who people want to see converted into a proper left back. He is crap defensively...worse than Alves...hell probably worse than Sergio Ramos aswell.

Honestly though I won't go on about any defenders performance against last years Barça. We made practically every defense look shit. I don't hold his performances against us as anything.

I wouldn´t want Zhirkov either. Too attacking minded. Even if this Filipe is also an attacking LB, at least he´s accustomed to Primera

True that. Except for Chelsea..

I don't want Zhirkov either. If he was to come, it should be for left wing, and not left back. This Filipe sounds be an okay buy?

I'd love Zhirkov because you guys seem to think he'll play as a LWB and our balance would be fooked. It's not that at all. He'd play anywhere on the left and when he plays LWB he'd probably do so in a game Dani isn't playing.

really?

coz I could have sworn a full-back that will close his winger down would be nice.

not stand there and give them five feet to cross (osasuna, betis away), or be far too narrow and allow an opponent acres of space in which to score (numancia), or get turned inside-out by a rookie sub making his club debut in the biggest game in the world. TWICE. (real madrid), or get suckered in by the oldest winger trick in the book and fail to recover despite that being their best skill, allowing the cross and goal (real madrid again) or form a useless part of a wall and allow a free-kick to go through you (betis home) or stand there and let a guy run inside you without once trying to get goalside (betis home again). and that's just off the top of my head!

it's also worth noting that abidal started I think maybe 3 games in europe, which tells you how much confidence pep has in him against european opposition.

what we need is a defensively complete fullback who can work in attack if need be. we don't need someone who can JUST race around on the cover, especially at the expense of all other defensive ability. yes he's better now than he was under rijkaard but that's like saying no line on the horizon is better than how to dismantle an atomic bomb. they're both still fucking shit.

Really? That should be usefull against CR eh?

I'll concede abidal would be useful against CR, but we only play him twice a year and I'm not advocating selling the motherfucker, just using him less.

Top of your head my arse  You just pointed out Abidal's faults all season. You do realize we can make one for every single player. Also Pep DOES trust Bilal. Sylvinho did play more in the group stages because of the quality of the opposition while Abidal was unlucky with injuries and one red card in the KO stages. I understand your points fully, but IMO those were shortcomings rather than habits. Abidal does put pressure on wingers more often than not, and is not easily beaten one on one. He was immense in our first death run. Wingers are bound to get the better of you sometimes, even if they were rookies  .I'm willing to concede that he's average at crosses, but defensivly I dont think there are many better options.

puyol played LB more than abidal in europe. again, tells you something. he should be our undisputed first-choice LB given the other options, and the fact that he's not says so much about pep's faith in him.

if by immense you mean turned inside-out by the rookie palanca, then yes. we're just lucky robben was suspended for that game.

look, I wanted abidal to come good this season. physically he's so powerful that if he could learn how to contribute offensively and learn how to pressure fullbacks properly he'd be PERFECT for us, especially because he has delusions of centre-back-ery which makes him ideal for our 433/343 hybrid.

but the faults are still there. I don't know how you think them being "shortcomings rather than habits" is in any way reassuring. he makes the same mistakes, repeatedly.

wingers don't have to beat him. he stands five yards away from the fuckers and gives them plenty of room to cross. yeah few can beat him down the line because he's huge and quick, but that doesn't excuse his inability to actually defend.

filipe luis will be first choice left-back, I'm sure of it.

The whole Puyol playing as a LB started because Abidal was injured. Please name one game where Carles or Sylvie played ahead while Abidal was fit, unless it was for obvious rotation reasons.
