Don't wet your pants people. Messi will win it.

Because God knows it will be a huge disgrace to the game if someone else won it, who happened to make a rather huge contribution for a team plus individually over the calendar year.

Clearly scoring against Plzen is considered among the biggest feats in the history of football...

Oh, im not saying it because of that goal. Frankly(pun intended :p) speaking then I don't care about what he did tonight. Im saying it since he won the UEFA Best player award for his very good last season and has done well now as well while Messi has been injured lately. It would be logical to think that he will win because of that. Whether he deserves it or not is another case.

Did Robben, Javi Martinez, Lahm, Schweini make a lesser contribution to their great last season? Not really. Then why does Ribery get all the credit? Why is he the favourite while his other team mates did better than him in the Champions League and the DFB- Pokal? Something to ponder upon.....

Then why didn't Iniesta win it last year? Seriously, the UEFA best player and Ballon D'or are two completely different things, voting-wise and criteria-wise. There's a reason why one is given at the end of a season at the other at the end of a year. But this debate is going in circles, just wait and see (Messi win it).

HUGE contribution? Like what? What has he done that Robben, Müller & Mandžukić Co. did not do?

And individually, what did he do?

Suckabov, I really envy your everlasting confidence in Messi's and our ability to win things against great odds. :barca scarf:

I wish I could just have 1/10 of yours. :p

In the BD case, it has more to do with the behaviour of voters in the last 3 years than with confidence. If you take a closer look at the BD and UEFA stats, you can see the odds aren't against Messi at all, whether he deserves it or not. To make a prediction and looking at who's voting this year, the treble probably isn't enough to break Messi's number of votes. That would be the case even if I wanted someone else to win. :) I do believe he can beat CR though.

I agree with this. Ribery has been fantastic this year but the entirety of Bayern were fantastic. It's not like he carried them. Javi Martinez, Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Muller, Kroos, Dante, Alaba, Robben, etc. all had a fantastic year. It's like in the years we won the CL where our whole team was absolutely brilliant in every position. Messi won those years because he was SO far ahead of everyone that it was criminal not to give it to him.

In 2011-12 and 2012-13, Messi was about 95% the reason why we even won anything at all with Xavi, Alves, and Pique declining while Puyol, Villa, and others got injured. If Bayern didn't have the incredible depth that they do and suffered injuries while at the same time having other players decline; I promise you that Ribery would not be able to carry them to the extent that Messi does or even Ronaldo sometimes carries Madrid when they're not playing at their best.

And individually, what did he do?

He's incredibly polyvalent, he can do almost anything in his position. He can cross from deep positions with good precision, run to the byline, dribble inwards or diagonally, beat defenders and take the shot, he can provide assists, he has a creative spark, he can dictate the pace of the attacking play and he has playmaking abilities. Plus, his defensive work is nothing short of admirable. In short, he's a constant menace on that flank and while at it, he's completely unpredictable. Much unlike Robben for example.

Let's not fool ourselves here though, because the actual reason he's put above the others in that team is because of his flair. His play is easy on the eye and technically he's the most gifted in this squad. A guy like Mandzukic, whose tactical understanding of the game is greatly underrated, is on a superficial level of observation merely the guy who scores some but can't keep his elbow holstered. On the superficial level, Martinez is a destroyer and Müller is a hard worker with excellent runs and positioning.
Rib shines brighter than all of them. And that's why he's considered the best.

He won't win the BD though, that's for sure.

So... Messi but with worse stats?
