Actually, I'm not so sure anymore if the FIFA doesn''t count like that still. After reading up how the FIFA handled this in their tournaments the only information one can find post '86 is that the technical study group decides on whether a contribution is counted as an assist, but no criteria are officially given. After all, what counts as an assist isn't set in stone and The Laws of the Game don't even mention them. They might as well have stuck to their old criteria.
