I notice him. He is too often out of position, or out of tempo.
He is not technically great either, struggled to handle a perfect, hard pass from Busquets today, for example.
He likes to have the ball, but often doesn't know what to do with it, comes deep to get it, looks up, finds no-one, passes it back 5 seconds later. Makes some forward runs, but they are often not so well synced.
He distributes the ball without real intention, he sees Dembele free and gets it there, even if the play should better move to the left flank. I think this has both to do with lack of confidence, but also lack of quality, unfortunately. Also a lack of direction from Koeman.

I am all the more confident he should be played as a CB. I had hopes on Koeman using him in his own old role, but he could work as one of two as well, with some work and with the right team mates.
He wants the ball in these spaces anyway, as a midfielder. He is very calm on the ball, press resistant, good on bringing the ball forward, can find a pass.
He is also decently fast, and should be able to compete for the ball with fast attackers better than Lenglet or Pique.

You're welcome
He is technically great. Maybe you caught him in a bad moment. If there is one player that controls the ball well it's Frenkie. Always able to control it or pass it after receiving it from difficult angles or under pressure.

He struggles in a slower paced game, ie these past two fixtures. For him to be at his best, the game must be more chaotic. Same with Dembele.

Before this week, de Jong was a top midfielder in the world. Today he isn't. Next week, he might be again.

Depends what great means. I'd say he's very good technically, but not great. It is not his strongest attribute, he solves most of these situations by a combination of calmness, "genious", quick feet, and his very good technique. But on these occasions he often loses his vision, focusing more on the opponents and on keeping the ball. In an isolated situation such as this one where he couldn't control the ball, you can see that he isn't technically great.
Of course anyone can make a mistake, but this is something I've noticed before, he relies on other things than technique.

Yeah this is true. Obviously I want Barcelona to play a non-chaotic, dominant game. As they did today, pretty much. De Jong could've been great as a CB in todays game.

In my head, his level has been pretty constant.

I'm a fan of De Jong but let's get a grip on reality here. He has not put in one stellar performance against top opposition since he's been here.

Three ordinary performances vs Atletico, two vs Madrid, one vs PSG and one vs Bayern where he was comfortably kept quiet all game in all of them. The team has ranged from ordinary to awful in them but it wasn't exactly like he was one standout amongst 10 idiots who couldn't stay on his wavelength.

Yes, he has chipped in with goals in games recently but with the hype, the transfer fee and the somewhat big reputation, he also needs to show more for me.

I think we're trying to shoehorn him into this sort of attacking midfielder, and this doesn't suit him. At this rate, he will not settle in in any role.

He was pretty much regarded the best midfielder in the world just some week ago in this thread, and that coincided nicely with him scoring a few goals, mostly rebounds...
He is a good player, I like him very much, Barcelona should keep him and try to find the right place for him, but he needs better guidance.
