Even some of our own fans underestimate La Liga sadly.

I remember plenty of people who just thought Rakitic was just "OKish" and "pretty good", but not that consistent and would rather see us buy some massively overhyped guy from Arsenal or City for triple the price. Its crazy really.

I remember suggesting signing Rakitic here(others did too) when he was linked to Real Madrid and many liked the idea although some had reservations about whether he'd fit in or not. Most posters here definitely rated him and thought he was a very good player. Some thought he was a downgrade to Cesc though.

Some thought he was a downgrade on cesc but most of them were happy rakitic was signed. Many had doubts about Mathieu though, especially considering the money we paid. But many agreed rakitic was an amazing signing and great bargain.

well he's been god compared to Tom Cleverley and he's definitely worth the price we paid for him...The thing that most excites people is that he's perfect for the league..

It will be interesting to see how Cleverly gets on with us next season. Fergie rated him very highly and so does Martinez.

Herrera is at about the same level as McCarthy which is decent and one of our best players but still in world football terms nothing special.

He doesn't need to become great player. Being a good universal backup for both wings would be enough. And we can easily pay 7.5 - 9 mil for such backup. Firminho went for 41 mil for Christ sake! Vietto for 20+. Deulo can be at least as good as they are if he fulfills just half of his potential. The problem with him right now is that he still has glaring weaknesses in his game and needs playing time to eliminate them. He won't get a lot of opportunities to play in Barca, unlike in Everton.

The problem with that theory is he won't go back to be a backup. At least not until he's older.

Rakitic was the captain of Europa league winners Sevilla and very clearly one of the best midfielders in La Liga. He's always been rated and was heavily linked with all of the top 3 in la liga last season as well as Liverpool. Players like those, even if they play for teams that aren't widely popular, are always rated and praised. As of now players like that are Otamendi, Vietto, Banega, Krychowiak, Nolito, Andre Gomes, etc. The next caliber are lesser known but still impressive such as Alberto Bueno, Aduriz, etc.

That's a far cry from Fontas who isn't even a top 15 CB in la liga or Camacho who in his best year was worse than Illarramendi while playing a defensive position for the biggest bus-parkers in la liga.

La Liga is definitely better than EPL even though it gets less than 10% of the hype and exposure. Thats just the reality, and European cup competitions just further proves it.

Parejo and Camacho have been better than Herrera in La Liga. Herrera was decent in La Liga and is hailed as world class in the EPL. I find that funny.

The reason why the EPL is more popular isn't because of the quality. La Liga is far superior. It's because the games are more competitive, faster and exciting to watch.

Ultimately teams like Arsenal, Utd and Liverpool would be about around europa league positions in La Liga. Chelsea is the only one that might break the top 4.

However La Liga is also pretty boring because Barca or Real hammer their opponents almost every week. It's fun for a Barca fan and people who want to watch Messi showcase how good he is but it gets a bit stale.

It's not just marketing.

These things also go in cycles. 10 years ago there was a strong likelihood some years that the UCL semi-finals would be all english teams. Italy before was dominant.

Plus the defending isn't great in La Liga.

Andre Gomes? He has been average for Valencia. It is Parejo who has been their main man together with their defense. Parejo would walk into any EPL team bar maybe Chelsea.

Fontas has also been the most important player for Celta together with Nolito. Thats a fact. And Celta has been great in the last couple of years.

Camacho was the best DM in La Liga last season together with Krychowiak and Busquets. And he has been a consistent performer for years now. Inter and Atletico have both been linked with him for a price of more than 30m euros.

When we signed Rakitic I remember ppl thought that he just wasnt world class and they wanted ppl from the EPL instead with bigger hype. Not all fans of course, but a substantial number of our fans sadly.

Lol, I'm not a fan of the premier league but you're defo underrating some of their teams. Chelsea would definetly be top four here. If they joined the league it would be a four way race to the title between ourselves, the madrid clubs and chelsea. Don't think chelsea would actually win la liga though but they'd be up there.

As for arsenal United and Liverpool. They would battle it out with Valencia Sevilla etc for the Europa league spots. Those clubs are at a similar level atm.

There's also city who would be top four, not title challengers though.

Ultimately teams like Arsenal, Utd and Liverpool would be about mid table in La Liga. Chelsea is the only one that might break the top 4.

However La Liga is also pretty boring because Barca or Real hammer their opponents almost every week. It's fun for a Barca fan and people who want to watch Messi showcase how good he is but it gets a bit stale.

Its marketing man. Ppl watch what the media in their country hype up and write about and English being the international language causes EPL to have a huge advantage. In Latin America, La Liga is the most popular, because thats what their media write most about.

Really?

They struggled with PSG and you beat them quite comfortably. They where outplayed at home the season before that by A Madrid. Chelsea would probably get 4th but I think they would be behind the big 3.

As for arsenal United and Liverpool. Yea I changed that after. I was probably being a bit harsh on them but I think they would all be behind Sevilla which is what I meant by mid table but I realized that mid-table means to most people around 10th rather than 5th to 15th.

I'm a fan of it and there's no doubt the the teams are far closer together and the bottom half teams are probably better than the bottom half teams in La Liga at least from around 13th or so down.

It's not. It's the fact the games are faster and more competitive. Plus there isn't as many stoppages for silly fouls. It's more watchable especially to Americans. :)

The bottom half of La Liga get more points over the course of the season than EPL teams get. That is the best way to measure how good the bottom half teams are and La Liga wins in that department.
