Most of the RBs or LBs today were wingers or midfielders who went on to become FBs.

Imagine someone like Pedro turned into a Rb or Lb.
That guy would know how to play both as a defender and as a smart attacker who can both play fast counters but also to slow down, keep the possession and play a patient possesseion game in attack.

Montoya didn't have the quality to play a smart attacking game.
Alba is brainless and can't play anything but kick the ball and run game in attack.
Vidal is weak in defense.
Roberto knew to play a patient game in attack since he is a midfielder, but was overall not good enough and somewhat scared to try anything.
Digne hasn't shown too much of a quality in attacking build up and possession game in attack.

So, they all might be former wingers, but majority of them are either:
1. Bad in defense
2. Poor quality in attack
3. Or too dumb to get involved in some more complicated slow possession based attacking actions

BBZ8800, why do you say about classical RBs, who play more conservatively, but still well in their job's description so to speak, that they are dumb? Fullbacks aren't exactly the most creative players on the pitch, their job is usually pretty straightforward. Just because we happened to have a rightback which redefined the roles tied to that position at Barca doesn't mean that what he did somehow becomes what others must do. You call them dumb, I call them normal.

Just like with Xavi, with Alves the player was the role. You can't have the same role re-assigned to other player and expect him to give you as much as all time greats do. What you need to do is take the loss in quality, or redefine the role.

'Too dumb to get involved in some complicated slow possession based attacking options'. Is that the criteria that makes you dumb at RB, them 99% of the players on the market are either dumb, or bad in defense because they are not natural RBs.

Denis says he talked with Bellerin, and says on one hand would like to come but on the other he feels bound to Arsenal.

It actually sounds like He wants to join but isn't that fussed on pushing Arsenal/Wenger hard enough to let him leave. aka the status quo.

Like

Bellerin: Hey Wenger can I go to Barcelona?

Wenger: No you're staying here.

Bellerin: Well that settles that.

And today with the U-21s... he was... on the pitch... doing nothing of notice. When he struggled controlling a ball by the end of the game... sigh...

Meanwhile, on the left, Gayá was showing what a promising fullback is supposed to do.

Technically he's lagging far behind.

I get that he's young, but it's going to be very hard if even possible for him to really improve that and get up to an elite level or at least a very good one.

Would look like an amateur compared to our other players here.

He's perfect for the EPL no doubt.

While he's young and will improve, his technical skill set right now is lacking and not anywhere near Vidal's and Roberto's. Valverde certainly has his work cut out for him if he comes here.
