His manager just said it's impossible for Rakitic to leave Spain this summer.

Lol called it. His Spanish wife won't let him move.

Will likely only accept move back to Sevilla.

For now we need all players playing as committed to the club as possible. After the results of the season then the squad would be assessed and a business plan. Ideally rakitic, busi and vidal lead the club to a trifecta, then hard decisions can be made. So of course the manager should say what he did--abidal and board need to look at things objectively after the season, and see what offers are from other clubs for a couple of vets. I personally feel umtiti's contract/next destination situation affected his play and the squad. A trifecta will also enhance their value, for the other club who feels they are a vet winner away in the midfield.

Would be a straight up bomb if he said he would leave this summer right now, when CL's about to start, etc.
Of course it is possible that he leaves, if we get a fine deal and he gets a wage-increase somewhere else.
London, Paris, I'm sure his girlfriend will get over it, if they leave..

Xavi and Iniesta were one of the best midfielders of all time, and they still knew when to step aside and give the youngsters their spot. Rakitic should know it as well, especially now that we've got De Jong coming as well. And Rakitic, even though he's still great, is far below Xaviesta's level, he shouldn't be allowed to stay here for however long he wants, cause he's not that important for our team, but more importantly, we also already have better alternatives lined up, which we didn't, when Xavi and Iniesta left, but they still left to make way for them. And even though Arthur didn't come until 3 years later, there still was a spot for him right away because Xavi left at the right time. Back to Rakitic: It's not logical to not sell him this summer, because it's the last chance to get some real money for him. But to even renew him would be pure madness.

Messi’s final years are already being wasted as it is. We need quality midfield, young, pacey, creative midfielders, who take risks with their passing. Fresh blood to help him and take the burden off him as he approaches his final years here. And as much as I like Rakitic for all he's done for Barca, he doesn't provide that anymore, he simply can't do it as he doesn't have the legs for it anymore.

I agree with a lot of your assessment, I have some twists though 1) this year we still need an effective Rakitic; 2) this year absolutely isn't "wasted"--we are are favorites or co-favorites for every competition; 3) in the offseason we can assess which vets should go; 4) your logic applies equally to Busi, who might command an even bigger fee and is on higher wages. Another factor is if we have a younger vet (Rabiot) as a back up if De Jong struggles next year to the huge change in the level of football and pressure he has not seen. (If we got Rabiot I'd try to encourage 2 among Vidal, Rakitic and Busi to move on). I don't want to count on De Jong being great in one's years time for Barca to be successful--talking about a way to possibly waste a Messi-year.

Well I watch a lot of City, and Rakitic has been a better player than De Bruyne for most all of the season. Otamendi has also been way better than Umtiti this year too--thet can chew on that one.

The more apt comparisons are to Fernandinho, Gundogan and Delph, and Rakiti is def better than the latter two. Hopefully this year we will see Fernandinho and co in a midfield against Rakitic and company and find out.

Quite honestly I think selling Rakitic to one of the Manchester clubs (if City falls short in the CL would not surprise me in the least), PSG or Chelsea will make a lot of sense. He would help Liverpool too but they don't buy 30 year old, expensive, players.
Nice work .. I needed a laugh :)

Same group of Rakitic bashers who complain now, will cry crocodile tears once he is replaced with a midfielder who does not play defense.

Mark my words!

How could Barca survive without the defensive reincarnation of Xavi Hernandez.

Will probably fall out of the top 4.

They just don't get to see the state of central midfielders in world football. Not that Rakitic is the be all end all, but he could play for most any club. But then again watching other midfielders and clubs maybe wouldn't matter either to this groups perceptions, on this board they seem to think Arturo Vidal at his current age and form is a vastly better player. They just want to see what they want to see--ignore the rashness, ignore the inaccurate passes, focus on a few other things. And I like Vidal too as an addition but understand his limitations, and that he should be a rotation player and probably best off the bench in the 2nd half.

Shut down the door for an extension. Hopefully he'll stop begging in public now.

Contract until 2021 and on some good wages already. There's nothing really more to discuss honestly.

Alba's deal is being held up because Alba wanted a big wage increase and Barto admitted he wants Alba to retire here but Alba needed to be more realistic with his requested wages. Right now Alba has a bigger case of being renewed by a good distance over Rakitic as he's our only top class LB we have.

With Rakitic we already have a couple of promising Midfielders in the squad such as Arthur and Alena and we paid 75 Million for Frenkie to come in the summer. Which makes it much easier to just be content with what's going on with Rakitic.
