Ivan Rakitić

You are right, Busi in this current form is not far from Rakitic. Still a better passer, so if we are to choose one of them to play, it would still be Busquets probably.

I'd personally start with De Jong - Vidal - Arthur for the first few games. Send a signal from the start. Both Busi and Rakitic on the bench. Rakitic at this moment should be, no offense, 5th option in midfield after De Jong, Arthur, Vidal, Busquets.

De Jong-Vidal-Arthur could be a terrific midfield.

The biggest problem with Rakitic isn't errors that lead to goal or nearly do. That isn't even in the top 5 of things wrong with him.

The things that ARE wrong with him can be boiled down to poor hips, poor touch, and poor workrate (for the past 2 years).

His insanely unathletic hips are probably in the bottom 5 percentile of all footballers, if not the bottom 1. It causes him to be almost incapable of changing direction quickly under pressure, and because of this he literally NEVER carries the ball unless it's a wide open lane right in front of him and even then he's slow.

Carrying the ball is critical for drawing players out of their static defensive positions to open up gaps. In fact, pay attention to football matches and you'll notice that a lot of team's "off the ball movement" to check in to space or make runs happens while the ball carrier is taking on a defender to create space for that movement. So people who say Rakitic suffers from everyone else not moving off the ball are dead wrong, because he is horrible at generating motion in the offense when he is on the ball.

Poor touch/technique is self explanatory, he rarely tries and even more rarely succeeds at difficult actions or maneuvers.

Poor workrate is the biggest reason he went from being serviceable for us to being an utter liability. The previous 2 abilities he has always been lacking in, but his poor workrate and complete lack of movement off the ball makes our buildup play way more static. You always see Arthur on the move, checking in and out, changing angles and directions. This creates motion and causes defensive disruption, allowing spaces for players to run in and the ball to advance.

Rakitic on the other hand sits happily away from the pressure and then plays football like a turnstile. Receives, turns slowly 180 degrees to look laterally, passes it to the nearest guy. Rinse and repeat. In fact it was this predictable, mechanical, unimaginary pattern that we see in his shitty pass against Liverpool to Alba that led to the error.

Please find me at least 3-4 gifs where Arthur is free and he passes the ball in a state of panic. Lol.

Arthur is always looking around him before receiving so he knows constantly when he needs to tap back and play a safe pass and when he can turn with the ball and find better options. He knows this, and doesn't panic, because a) he informs himself about available space around him pre-receiving, b) has the technique to do a very good first touch so the ball remains in his control very fast, and c) has the composure and the confidence due to having done this many times.

Please don't go full retard by saying now Arthur is not very good under pressure and is similar to Rakitic in this aspect.

Let me tell you what happened there with Rakitic so you understand what caused the horrible giveaway. Rakitic receives the ball and doesn't have a clue what is going on behind him. He wasn't even ready to receive because he was already tensed. This happens often, because he is not used to providing a way in build-up under pressure. He doesn't have the confidence to enter hot zones, take the ball from there and oxygenate the play so to speak. He is not a fixer, that turns a pressure situation into a cohesive attack. He is a transferrer, which means that when he deals with a pressure situation he often transfers the pressure to a teammate, and when you do that, the pressure usually gets higher, in direct contrast with the options on the ball, which get fewer and riskier as you're now playing closer to your goal and an error is even more problematic.

That's the hard part in playing through pressure. If you don't do the required things to defuse it quickly, it adds up and adds up until it leads to a spill or an error. Even though Rakitic is not usually the one directly making the error, he is often the main responsible for it, because he plays in a position where he has the tools to defuse the pressure, but rarely does. So why doesn't he do it? Too much panic, too low confidence, too many weighty touches due to average close ball technique. When Rakitic does receive and is sort of surrounded by opponents (rarely asks the ball in such cases), basically he panics because he thinks the opponents are breathing down his neck, when in reality plenty of times they are far enough for him to have time to advance the play. You put Arthur and Rakitic in the same pressure situation, and Arthur would probably find the same level or pressure that forces Rakitic into mistakes completely manageable and playable. When Rakitic received the ball in the above gif, he felt the pressure (which was lol worthy since there wasn't any) and he passed the ball as to get rid of it, trying to pass the hot sausage to a teammate, hopefully someone better than him who could maybe find a better solution to advance the play. Sadly his first touch is usually average in tight spaces, and he finds an opponent instead, and the hot sausage turns into a shot off the post for PSV.

When you try to pass your way out of pressure and you play Rakitic, it's like trying to do ballet with a WWE wrestler.

Rakitic as a CM almost always has a 360 degrees viewing field and passing angle, if he moves well and is smart. A wide variety of solutions, and contrary to BBZ's ideas, a back pass can be smart if it is the best viable solution to a pressure situation. A defender has at best 180 degrees if he plays centrally. A fullback has even less, probably the least options from all players. Usually it's only 90 degrees passing and viewing angle if he's playing near the corner. Those 90 degrees get considerably narrower in games vs aggresive teams like Liverpool. A great midfielder always has more weapons and more solutions to defuse a bad situation. So when people shit on Alba because Rakitic put him in a terrible position, it is just unfair.

My biggest gripe with Rakitic right now is this perceived, self anointed 'omnipotence' he seems to have developed under small-time Valverde.

At his best he was an adequate squad player who seems to think he's reached legendary status when he's nowhere near it.

Squad player which should be his role here, and after the multiple dreadful performances he pulled last season, as a squad player that he is (quality wise), he should be struggling to get off the bench and not be an undisputed starter here.

It was quite telling how he threw his toys out of the pram last season - I think it was against Real Madrid - when Valverde uncharacteristically hooked in off the pitch after he was having one of his usual horror shows. Game after game he plays like shit, the one time he was subbed, he bitched and bitched.

Zero spatial awareness, press-resistance close control, technique...and yet, ego like Ronaldo's.

Rakitic isn't the worst player in the universe. He is just not good enough anymore to be considered an undisputed starter. He can still play a part in this team, if he stays, but needs to be utilized in matches were his weakness are not exposed.

Dembele isn't an awesome player. He is young and very talented with many flaws and an undeserved high pricetag.

Arthur last year competed with Vidal for a starting spot, not with raki and busi. He has shown good potential for a midfielder of his age. Also he has his own flaws and bad matches, and should also be utilized in matches where his attributes are required.

The most balanced and on target post I have seen in a while. All of the midfielders last year had flaws. We are hoping a) De Jong barely has any while also adding dynamism in the middle of the park, and b) Arthur get substantively better and more consistent given his youth and last year was his very 1st in Europe. There is no way to get around he played above expectations last year, but he wasn't a consistent and dominant force in the midfield any more than the 3 vets were. I am expecting this year he is an undisputed 1st choice on the teamsheet, it is hard to imagine a player topping out at 23 and 1 year in Europe big leagues, but this is more a hunch than something to point to in data and observation, I could be wrong.

There is a lot to look forward to but the hissy fit over Aturo vs Rakitic vs Busi--all three on the + side of 31 and with substantial attributes and substantial flaws--is way too much arguing over peanuts. (BTW Roberto and Alena doesn't belong in any their class in midfield spots and should not even be brought up.) I don't plan to argue more about it unless there are more completely BS and one sided digs at any of them. Way too much breath/typing about Rakititic--I admit I could be wrong here as it is beyond stats and deep workings of the club, but I more concerned with Busi being the mainstay on the pitch , and a force in the lockerroom and the board/fans, that hinders our development.

He is neither as bad as some claim, nor as good as others claim. I think his time at Barca is over, if/when he leaves I envision him being that teams best midfielder, you could see it at the World Cup, but yeah his time at Barca should've ended last year.

I know the guy who made this video has an agenda and all, but nonetheless, it shows there's plenty more than just 'one dumb pass' here. Quite a few more actually.

It's amazing how he managed to stay on the pitch at Anfield for 80 minutes despite being the worst player on the field. Anyone else especially Arthur would have been subbed long before 4-0. When Ernie finally decided to take him off, the game practically over at that point.
