Jeremy Mathieu

He's pushing for the move. Good. We might be able to get him for less than the buyout. Hope the 15m + Afellay deal goes through, because 20m + tax is WAY too much for him. Hell, I'd even say 15m + Afellay is more than he's worth.

He'd be a decent backup option. Now I just hope we get another (starting) CB. Coz Mathieu alone is nowhere near enough.

Wow he's desperate to come here, even throwing an adult temper tantrum to get his wish...

Don't want him anymore, too clingy :jds:

Yo all will miss JDS now that he's gone. Our clingy quota is empty. Need someone to pour the hate out on when things get tough :mou:

6'3, decent pace, solid defender. He is above average, nothing magnificent however. I do enjoy the fact he is tall and very strong though. Thing is- he is 30 years old, 31 in October. He will be a bench player, someone nice to have that can cover CB or LB. We will need a STARTING center back.

I'd also like Alves to leave, he's been total shit this season and not much better the season before. Would of loved Aurier...he's going for so cheap too.

Completely agree with Alves - I think the RB spot is actually more of a problem than CB.

I'd love a WC starting CB to partner Pique and then Bartra to play as a defensive RB.

Barta - Pique - ? - Alba

That back four, coupled with Rakitic/Rafinha meaning Busquets is no longer the only midfielder who helps out defensively and we'd be perfect!

according to MARCA this mathieu deal will reach up to 36Mil after taxes, if this is true...

We'll probably agree a fee under 20m and put some incentives and such if he comes. I doubt we'll pay his buyout hence having to pay tax + vat

Valencia again confirmed that even though Mathieu asked for the move we either pay his buy-out or get out.

There would be no taxes. Paying the buyout clause doesn't necessarily force additional taxes. People here just don't understand why and when taxes come into play.

can you explain?

It's not the buyout clause per se that imply taxes. Why would it? There is no such thing as a "buyout clause tax". It's when the selling club doesn't want to talk even if the buyout clause is being activated. No talks = no money receiveable. In that case the player has to buy himself out of his own contract. To do that the buying club gives the money to the player. If a club transfers millions of Euros into the pocket of a person that counts as income. So there is income tax involved. But it doesn't have to go that far. Valencia are not desperate to keep Mathieu at all cost and make it as miserable for Barca as possible as if he's a 19 year old huge prospect Barca is stealing off them so in return they are getting one over Barca by forcing them to pay additional taxes. They simply want to get € 20M. Tax don't interest them as tax goes to the tax office and not into Valencia's pockets. So they will talk and not force Mathieu to buy himself out of his contract. As long as they get the amount from his buyout clause.

Same way Bayern didn't pay taxes for Thiago because Barca and Bayern have good relationships so they did talk with each other instead of forcing the traitor to buy himself out.

Yes, but if it goes this way, the selling club can force the buyers into paying more than what's written in the players' buyout clause, just like Bayern paid a few millions more for Thiago because paying the buyout clause without Barca's consent would have been more expensive due to taxes.

Athletic and Sociedad are good examples for clubs who rarely negotiate. Not every club is like this but if Valencia want, they can force us into paying more than 20m (which we won't pay) or even refuse negotiations of any kind.
