Madrid's third choice CB (Varane) is better than Mathieu in his sleep. Yet Mathieu will probably be a starter for us. Am I the only one who thinks this is fucked up? I can't think of a single top team where Mathieu would be a starter (besides Barca, of course).

Well,Varane isn't the typical 3rd choice CB either and he would be starter in most European elit clubs
Mathieu isn't that bad from the little I've seen him,we overpaid for sure and the fact we could have got him when he was 1 year younger with half the price hurts .that said he is at least an improvement over Mascherano and Bartra ,considering we have Zubi it isn't that fucked up
With all that said,I would be happy if we get another good starting CB ,Benatia,Laporte,Hummels,Marqunhos etc but all of them would cost a lot,and non of them are even for sale
