Jeremy Mathieu

WTF is up with you. I asked you a simple questions but you seem to avoid it. PLEAAAASE tell me why you don't regard crucial aspects of football like tactics or balance while shooting against against one of our defenders. please please please...

Tactics are important, but so is personnel. If tactics are all you need, why even spend 20m on Mathieu? Promote Ie and Bagnack and call it a day. Hell, why not sell Pique and promote that Rodrigo Tarin guy to lower our wage bill while we're at it. After all, all a defense needs is good tactics, right?

Mathieu is a great player who has all attributes we need. Speed, height, pass accuracy but nevermind....

Mathieu is a great defender who fits our system, Benatia is world class but everytime I watch him he tends to hoof the ball and acts wildly sometimes.

Mathieu won't block Bartra's development, while a player like Hummels or Benatia would.

Take ie easy darth. Why do you need to bash everything thats barca. Barcelona plays on a high line which means there is alot of space between the last line and the keeper. And last year ww barely pressed and when we did it was ineffective. And yet we didn't concede alot of goals. Who knows what would have happened if we still had Vv and pique till the end , we might have won a trophy or 2. In othert words we had more issues with tactics and depth than anything else.

Zubizarreta: “Mathieu is an excellent football player. He gives us versatility, he’s intense and he knows how to play in a three-man defence”

“Mathieu knows how to play with a lot of space between him and the goal he’s defending, that’s a basic trait that all Barça defenders have.”

So I should be blindly optimistic about everything?

Not blindly, but why not optimistic? We clearly have improved our defence since last season. Sure, Mathieu isn't world class or anything, but he'll surely give 100%, and he will work his ass off day in day out. And he's great in the air, has a good speed, and he brings that physicality that Bartra lacks so much, given his age. He brings hunger with him, the ambition to prove to the world he is a damn fine player. He gets this chance at almost 31 and he's gonna fight hard to take advantage of it, I can assure you of that.

He might be one of those rather unspectacular transfers that strenghten a team a lot. Maybe even more than we expect. Just give him the benefit of the doubt, you owe him that much as a Barca fan.
