Jorge Mendes meeting shows Laporta's making moves
Despite recently stating that he hasn't decided whether to run in Barcelona's presidential elections, Joan Laporta has started setting the wheels in motion to do just that.
Laporta, who served as the club's supremo from 2003 to 2010, has begun manoeuvring in case the current board decides to call early elections (they are presently scheduled to take place in 2016). One of his first moves was to break bread with one of the most powerful people in football today, Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes.
The pair sat down for a hush-hush lunch meeting at Restaurante Filandón, a traditional roadside establishment located by the motorway on the outskirts of Madrid - the perfect place for a secret rendezvous. Their cover was blown by the fact that several acquaintances, including Juventus striker Fernando Llorente and his agent Vicente Garrido, happened to be dining there at the same time.
Laporta and Mendes go way back: the Portuguese businessman engineered several transfers to the Camp Nou while Laporta was at the helm and was even involved in discussions over the possible appointment of José Mourinho as Barça's coach, though this obviously never came to fruition and Pep Guardiola ended up getting the job.
During the meeting, Mendes gave Laporta the lowdown on the lie of the land in the transfer market right now, since the lawyer has been out of football for the last four seasons. The 52-year-old, who is also a Catalan MP, wants to cover all the bases ahead of his likely bid to regain power and can take heart from the fact that he's currently ahead in all the polls.
