How Jim Ratcliffe tried to buy 50 per cent of Barcelona An extract from a new book about the Ineos founder, who is trying to acquire Manchester United, discloses for the first time his attempt to purchase Catalan giants

"We told Barcelona, 'We’ll put in two or three billion, renovate the Nou Camp and have 50% ownership – and sign a deed to say we’d never sell.'

"The road Barcelona are going down is a disaster. We tried to point that out"

---

The possibility of acquiring a percentage of Barcelona has certainly been floated to those in the know.

More from Jim Ratcliffe. Exactly what I feared all along. Everyone knows that selling part of the club needs doing, including those at Barca themselves, but they also know they will never get it approved by the members.

If Jim is right we will be further screwed in the coming years with around 50 percent of the budget of the other super clubs. He also mentions how the president's pass on the mess they have created through their short termism.

In conclusion, the member/ president structure is slowly killing us and even those at Barca, agree.

He said: 'We told them, "Don't do it - we'll put in two or three billion, renovate the Nou Camp and have 50 per cent ownership - and sign a deed to say we'd never sell."

'Our interest was in football alone, not making money. I think it would have worked.'

Ratcliffe then added: 'We talked about it but, in the end, they didn't think they could go to the fans with it. The road they are going down is a disaster.

We tried to point that out and they said, "We know, but..." They are all short-termers [Barcelona regimes] because the president comes in, does it for five years and hands the mess over to someone else.

'They have now sold a chunk of the TV rights, and merchandising rights, for the next 25 years. They've sold them to American hedge funds. So they've got this big slug of cash, which they can now... waste.

'But if you looked at top football clubs - Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and so on - they had roughly similar budgets: say £800 million for the sake of argument.

Because of what Barcelona had done, theirs would be more like £500 million.

'That's why we told them not to do it. But they said no, and now we've got that out of our system, we can concentrate on Nice.'

It's exactly what he said. President comes in for few years. Uses the club for personal promotion and as atm machine for him and his friends, then hands over the mess to someone else.

It's basically la Masia that kept us top. Because our sports scouting and CEOs haven't done anything remotely mediocre in comparison to others.

Radcliffe, "we want to buy 50% of Barcelona"

Barcelona team " No, we will go in a different direction"

Radcliffe "you guys are making a terrible mistake, not taking our offer".

Stunning!!!, Who would have thought that.

Fuck that Rat again. "Our interest was in football alone, not making money", yeah right. Who would be so stupid to believe that? They are in everything for money.

Yeah, "concentrate on Nice". Since I have been resoundingly rejected by Charlize Theron, poor me, now I got her out of my system, I am going to concentrate on a porn star.

Imagine offering for 50% and never selling. Basically means the members hold the burden.

So many holes in that statement.

He's right that a huge cash injection is needed round the corner though. But right partner, he isn't.

Get Steve Ballmer to sell the Clippers and buy a 49% stake with us instead. He's wasting all that time and resources on like the 5th most popular sports team in Los Angeles lol.

If we sell a stake in the club I'd rather we sell it to someone who want to win and not make money off the club. Ratcliffe & INEOS probably want to do both. Win enough to make money rather than go all-in like these oil states and billionaires like Ballmer do.

Ridiculous

The company's annual revenue surged from $25 billion to $70 billion, while its net income increased 215% to $23 billion, and its gross profit of 75 cents on every dollar in sales is double that of Google or IBM.[31] In terms of leading the company's total annual profit growth of 16.4%, Ballmer's tenure at Microsoft surpassed the performances of other well-known CEOs such as General Electric's Jack Welch (11.2%) and IBM's Louis V. Gerstner Jr. (2%)
