I hope he recovers quickly. In the meantime, Montoya has to play every game to get conditioned in time for the PSG clash. Hopefully him being a defensive fullback would make the partnership with Dani a solid one defensively.
Alba could be back by the PSG clash, but yes, Montoya does need to be played in every game in case he's not.
I'm not sure how good Montoya is at LB (haven't really seen him play there), but the fact that he's a defensive fullback could give us a bit more solidity in the defense.
Alba's injury reminds us that we need a back-up at LB
Is Planas good enough for first team?
Yeah, I was not thinking very carefully. Don't know why but I often forget Adriano.A backup LB is really a weird issue. In theory, we have Adriano, Montoya and (let's pretend for a moment) Abidal. But Abidal is not match ready, Adriano is injured most of the time, which brings us to situations like this, where we have no backups when either Alba or Alves is injured. We bought Alba because we needed someone to take Abi's place. But if Alba can't play, we're back at square one.
I think Abidal will probably never return completely to competitive football, so I wouldn't count on his services next season. He'll also turn 34 this year. I'm not saying he should be given the sack or whatever, I'd keep him at the club for as long as possible/reasonable, it's good to have him around, but what I'm saying is that we should probably design our squad without Abidal in mind. Alba is and will probably be our first choice left back for years to come. Alba and Alves as starters, with Montoya and Adriano as backups would work fine in theory, if it wasn't for Adriano's frequent injuries. We would benefit enormously from buying a defender who's primarily a CB, but could step in as a LB if needed. It would cover our CB shortage problem, and provide us with another option if something like this were to happen again. It would also be a good combination to have with the very attack-minded Alves on the right.
David Luiz, maybe?
