Perhaps not everyone. There are one or two who somehow actually believe Alves is the superior defender, but a very very large majority

not speaking for them, see for yourself if you'd like.
People stating that Alves is worse than Alba defensively?
All over the place, and they're very right. This basically sums up Alves in defense if he actually tracks back:
One image 1000 words,Pique to noone, Alves getting Gomez and leaving Ribery tottaly unmarked Bartra doesnt know where he is looking or what to dne good ball to Ribery and hes 1vs1 with Valdes..That shows how bad are defensive tactics areAll over the place, and they're very right. I have watched all the game,i said what it might have happened..and it will happen if we continue like thisGo and watch the first few minutes of that game.
Alves was 100% correct to tuck in there.
Alba isn't great but Alves is just downright horrible defensively. Whatever positive contributions Alves has made this season have been in attack (inconsistently). Both lack in defensive positioning and skill but Alba at the very least has the pace to keep up with the opposition and intercept and has the sense not to leave players on his flank wide open when in defense.
What was Bartra doing near him?and seriously Alves marking Gomez? he too strong and much taller for himNo it doesnt just watch again.
Alves is 100% correct to be tucked in, if he had not been Mario Gomes was totally free in the box to looking for a cross.
If anything that picture is totally misleading.

That pic is misleading. Alves was correctly supporting the centrebacks against the players in the box. Ribery made a late run that was untracked. Either the winger or Xavi should have tracked him.
