Wait, are people actually defending Alves's defending?

In that instance where people have smugly tried to make out he was sucked in and out of position Alves is correct to be where he is.

He should never be in there covering Gomes but he had to.

Either way, it wasn't "good defending" as you're somehow trying to call it. The point of the picture was basically to show not only from that game, but from the entire season how many times he leaves his player free to run while marking the center which is often already covered by the CB's. It's either that, being too far up the pitch to run back, or rashly sliding into a foul

Of course it was good defending to cover Gomes run when CBs were out of position.

You have now tried to change it that his body position is poor which was never the argument.

That will happen when a full back is sucked into the middle to mark a CF anyway.

No it's running in to mark a guy and then ignoring him while staring at the man in possession, ignoring the man he has to mark.

Get real that was not your original point.

Thats what happens when a full back is called to cover a CB.

It was very good defending from Alves. Other than maybe how well he man marked Gomes, which has been the point anyway.

Covering a CB is not bad, but at least look at your position as well.

Initially deciding to cover Gomez was right, after that it was all wrong. Besides it's not JUST the situation in that one picture. There have been so many goals which Alves has been responsible for, Alba on the other hand has been directly responsible for far fewer. I don't understand how you are so high and mighty about this when you have no evidence to back you up.

Jesus christ, he has been left to look after two men! He is panicking and looks like he initially thinks someone will drop on Gomez.

They dont and he is scrambling trying to keep with Gomez.

The man marking is not great but thats not the orginal point.

It all started with that picture being an example of his poor positioning and being sucked in when in fact the way he tracked the run and stayed Gomez was about the only defender doing his job.

'After that its all wrong'

You have changed the tune as proven to be incorrect about that picture.

He is not a center back and wont man mark like one. Its not his fault he has been sucked in there.

That piece of defending was overall still bad, only one initial thing that isn't a total flaw. He's no CB but there's absolutely nothing you've suggested that gives any proof that Alves>Alba defensively.

Absolute joke comment.

You expect a full back who has come in to cover a CB to confidently take care of two men one of them the best one of the top penalty box strikers in the world.

It has gone from him being poorly positioned - which he wasnt. To now not man marking Gomes while covering the wide player.

Get real, Alves did well in that situation to cover.

Its not his job to cover the striker!imagine if Ribery would score there, then we would look what you say

He didn't cover well and wasn't positioned well. He chose to stick with Gomez while leaving Ribery open after Bartra ran in, and even then he left Gomez with what would've been a free header.
