That pic is misleading. Alves was correctly supporting the centrebacks against the players in the box. Ribery made a late run that was untracked. Either the winger or Xavi should have tracked him.

Alves shouldn't have been there. Bartra's the one who was marking Gomez, he should at least have been watching his position. Just shows how they need to communicate at the back.

At first he was but then he completely lost awareness of the play that was going on behind him. Even when Bartra ran in, Alves didn't check to see behind him like he should've and eventually even let Gomez free into space that would've made it easy to have an open header had the ball gone in.

You are wrong.

Pique is miles out of position and Bartra is looking after the near post area as they are told to do.

The defence is a shambles. Had Alves not stayed there a simple cross into the middle was all it would take for Gomes tap in.

Leaving winger spare is lesser of evils.

The fact is you used a picture to claim bad defending from Alves without knowing the situation and in reality is was actually good defending.

You know what dude,i feel like you want to argue with people being right or even wrong. And i wouldnt like to argue with you from the moment you say Alves is good at crossing...

Alves has been shit this season and has been on the decline since we won the CL,and of course he completes the most crosses in our team since nobody else crosses the ball -.-

In the picture?

Alves has tracked a Gomes run into the box when Barta was caught out of position.

It is taken when Bartra is just coming back and in no body position to defend a cross.

It was good defending from Alves, watch the video.

Farrrr from good defending  He completely lost Gomez as well, not even marking him correctly let alone acknowledging the rest of the space behind him. He over-compressed and left the player he was marking free along with the one he wasn't.

I said he is shit at crossing but has the best stats actually.

That picture was taken Alves was correct to be where he was, if not Gomes had a free header.

You are unreal.

Alves was the only defender swicthed on to stopping Gomes.

There is nothing more he could have done.

He is about the only defender in that sequence doing his job ffs!

He tracked Gomez's run, then after that paid no attention to Gomez's movement.

He is not a center back or a good defender.

But he was there to track the run and try to put him off.

He was covering for the other defenders!!
Alves is leaving way too much time and space to his opponents, most times he doesnt press them or even try to block the shot..Remember Ronaldo's goal back in the 2-2.And also when he goes forward he just forgets to come back, its a joke really to say that he defends good

Either way, it wasn't "good defending" as you're somehow trying to call it. The point of the picture was basically to show not only from that game, but from the entire season how many times he leaves his player free to run while marking the center which is often already covered by the CB's. It's either that, being too far up the pitch to run back, or rashly sliding into a foul
