United with Mata will have a good attacking options. Midfield and defense will be the major factor for United not going for 4th this season. Vidic is out and when he plays he can't even mark somebody. Smalling and Jones are injury prone. Rafael is a joke of a defender and Evra, well, Evra. And I'm not gonna start talking about midfield. a proper midfielder with Mata and United "might" have a shot on 4th.
I just feel that some quality attacking options will paper over the defensive problems....Rafael was terrific last season and Evans was decent too...Poor performance may just be down to low morale

But with Rooney and Van Persie ready to come back, the current game plan won't suit them all with Mata. Unless Moyes would use his brain and try 4-3-2-1, one of Mata and Rooney will be wasted with a wide position.

I would use 3-5-2 formation instead of 4-2-3-1 because the 3 of Rooney,Mata and Janujaz offer no pace at all....playing back 3 of Evans,Jones and Smalling with Valencia/Rafael and Evra playing as wing backs would be a better option............

3-5-2 wouldn't work so well in PL unless you have a really powerful DM. Carrick can't do it at the top level anymore.

How is it any different than having Evra as left back? He hardly defends so having 3 Centre Backs is better than 4 man defence with evra as left back....and we could use Jones as a DM if Vidic is fit to play in back 3....I'm not a big fan of 3-5-2 formation but 4-2-3-1 with slow players will be too easy to defend against...Mata would struggle to fit in our system but we'll regret passing up on the chance to sign him.......

Mata would be a start to a major rebuild progress at United. Many players are needed and new ideas for game plans are needed too. Fergie's classic 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 isn't working anymore. I doubt Moyes to be having any new ideas but I Ferguson must let go of the club and let the manager put his own stamp (Again, doubt that Moyes has it in him to lead United to trophies) but he should be given the space to try his thing.

Fergie has already let go of the club and Moyes is completely in charge....I'm surprised people bring this up just because Fergie attends matches......Fergie believed that manager should have absolute power at United so there is no way he's going to interfere with the team.....We are only 3-4 top players short of competing for the title....A good left back and two central midfielders along with Mata will be enough in my opinion...

Jesus its hard to shake of tag's when players get them, Rafael stopped being a bad defender years ago. Hes just too attacking minded so hes susceptible to counter attacks.

Mata to United is looking promising now, and it's more than just all the usual BS ITK's pressing on with this now. Would not only be a class player for us, but would also give everyone a big lift.

Still not getting too carried away though.

Rofl, what a terrible team. Mata in a 3 man midfield? come on.. Who's going to do the running in that team? Carrick, Fellanini and Mata?

Also has absolutely no width which is not how Utd have ever really played, so it could be hard for them to adapt. Sure, they will score goals -- but they would also concede heaps.

So Mourinho didn't want Ba to go on loan to Arsenal, but giving Mata to Utd is fine? I could only see this happening with Rooney going the other way, which would strenghten Chelsea more than Utd.
