Lionel Messi - v7

Seeing how the 17/18 EV's side is somewhat similar to how ATM plays, I would say he still score a lot.

Nope, that EV team was nowhere near as defensive as AM. Also, we've had two walking amigos upfront who the rest of the team had to work for defensively. So if anything we should also give credit to them for Messi actually scoring as much as he did.

Roles are the same except that he didn't play with a former Goat/dictator/owner of Fc Messi on the field.

So now it's no longer about his position, it's now solely about Messi preventing Coutinho's ability to dribble past players, create, and score goals? Man I don't even care about the Messi debate anymore but I'm still going to say you're hilariously biased rn. lmao

Griezz played at Atletico who are less possession based and less dominant.

At Barca, attackers will usually get more shooting attempts.

Or, the opposite: if Messi played his whole career at AM under Simeone, do you think that he would get as many shooting attempts as at Barca?

** I see that Messi983 already explained the same.

Griezz had these total numbers at Atletico per season:
32, 29, 26, 25, 21

20-25 goals at Barca without Messi doesn't sound that crazy.

Truth is Messi era is ending, I cant wait for barca to move on and rebuild fully. I personally dont like seeing a player walking on the pitch when others are running around. I also dont think any worse thing can happen to this barca if we dont play without Messi right now (I mean struggling to win 18th place Levante!!) A full rebuild and Messi leaving is best for both parties (The team structure with Messi on the pitch is so predictable, they start depending fully on him again and everything gets messy, and yeah I get that it is not his fault). He would always be a barca legend though.

Nowhere near as defensive? Maybe, but it's not as much imo.

The principles are similar. 442, strong in defense and in transition, compact, midblock, drop deep when the opposition gets closer.

I tend to agree.

Setups where others defend and he has freedom upfront work best for this aged version of Messi. The worst system for him currently is some fast intense football that requires pressing and movement. Say if he played for Bayern or Liverpool currently, he'd barely touch the ball considering how fast and direct they play and would fuck up their press.

Bayern and Liverpool would not stop fast attacks to wait for Messi to catch up and cope with the rhythm and pace of the game. The game would move past him.

This doesn't happen in Barcelona because he has a privileged spot that all the managers have to cater to.

You still on with the shameless EV cartwheeling, dawg? It's almost a year and LeagueMaster hasn't had a big job offer.

Big L.
