Madrid are also shit. But we also have the Lenglet and Umtiti factors. They don't have that.

Casemiro, Varane, Ramos, are different league compared with Busi, Lenglet and Pique. If we weren't so far off them in these positions we'd finish a good 5-6 points ahead of them.

I really can't see that required level being so high. This is a statement from entitlement. We are a midtable team without Messi and with Messi we can't be a top team any more, because of his age. So, all we need is above midtable players to be better. We can get some of those if we sell out every single one of the older ones.

I disagree. He is adapt at every position in midfield/attack. Given his free role he can read play up front like no other, the most accurate feet I've seen since David Beckham. Messi holds the record for most assists in the history of La Liga, currently 186. Also many of his co-assists to Jordi Alba came from Xavi's natural area (post 2015).

What? You really think you can boil down a midfielder to assist numbers?

It doesnt work that way, at all.

Messi never had the work rate, or positioning to be a real midfielder, he simply isnt a midfielder.

Football is played in two ways.

Name one midfielder from big clubs who doesn't press and defend.
You can't play only in an attacking phase.

Messi is about as far away as you will get from playing 'the Xavi role'.

Xavi was an athlete who covered every blade of the nicely trimmed grass following ball into areas he knew could influence game.

Messi plays like a second striker that takes his moments and plays a high risk game.
