Lionel Messi - v7

BarcaOG - your suggestion of 15m p/a, less than Griezmann, is not feasible. Messi's commercial value is still on top level in football and brings a lot of revenue to the club. Sportwise he's the backbone of our squad, without him we will struggle for Europa League places even with Haaland. This is not like getting rid of Rivaldo or Ronaldinho.

In 2021, Messi has been playing as a top 3 player in the world. It's him, Mbappe, Neymar, Lewa, and Benz who are for most people as the top 5 best players in Europe at the moment.

Should he be paid 100 M given our finances? No.

Should he paid 15 M? Also laughable, considering that he is THE face of Barcelona. And still producing at top 3-5 level easily.

I think problem now is not that people say he doesnt deserve 40 or 50 M. Its more because barca is in a big financial crisis and the club struggles to pay his high salary.

Well, that's why he should go down from his ~100M to ~40-50M.

But, after that, there's other places to cut. Bums like Umtiti, Dembele and the like. Maybe even Griezmann (who has been good of late but still doesn't fit us well).

There are many players who need to go but before they are out of our club its difficult to pay Messi his required salary.

Headline from 3 months ago:

Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta has claimed his candidacy study revealed that Lionel Messi generates one-third of the club’s income.

Would Laporta give details on that now?

It's already reported that Messi is willing to cut his salary down to half of what he earns now, but that his contract extension hinges on the sporting project.

Let's face the truth no club not even PSG will offer him more then 45M. We shouldn't go above 50M

PSG might offer more tbh. There's not going to be any FFP implications any longer with UEFA going for a very lenient approach. Now Nasser is also the head of the ECA.

I don't think Messi at this point of his career is motivated financially to base his decision around that.

If Barca somehow can manage to offer an attractive 1-3 year project for him I think he takes that even if we offer less money. Won't have to uproot his family to go elsewhere.

frankly i dont think any player anywhere, not even mbappe, should get more than 15m a year from their respective clubs. the fact that Griezmann is making more than that already is a solid indicator that the payscale is broken. especially at this time when all clubs, even the big ones, are strapped for cash.

besides: dont forget that athletes like messi probably earn as much, or much more, from advertising deals with adidas/nike/whatever. its not like theyre poor.

It depends on how much income Messi generates for the club. Messi is a worldewide brand, the relation Messi-Barcelona is a unique worldwide money-making machine.
I had read a some analysis about it (margins of error, yes, but the figures are around these levels) and that was pretty much what I supposed. Last summer everything was done to keep him at the club and in Spain.... for sure not for sporting reasons but rather for economic reasons

It is almost certain that Messi does not cost Barcelona anything, in fact they make a profit with him.

The payscale is determined by the president of the club, based on consultations with the sporting and finance departments. Some are reckless, some are pragmatic. Barto gambled all in on Messi until 2021. He lost.

Frankly I don't care about the personal wealth Messi's accumulated. He could be a billionaire, I don't know, but sure he has earned that money on the pitch with his football skills. Same way Michael Jordan did.
