Lionel Messi - v7

Inter Miami, aka almost FC Barcelona Miami. Wonder if Laporta has his eyes set on franchising the FC Barcelona name to Miami and having a partner agreement with them. Especially as there is an on-going legal case for being called Inter with Inter Milan.

Certainly would make sense if Messi moves there in a few years and "continues the Barcelona name" with our marketing agreement :)

You heard it here first. :coffee:

Posted the above in the Dembele thread by mistake.

I don't know how franchising works, do we have to fork out a lot of money to own part of that club? Or do we just sell our brand name and Inter Miami or whatever they are going to be called will be fully owned by Beckham and their own people, and they just pay us a fee for using our brand name? If it is the former I don't see us doing it since we don't have extra money lying around, if the latter it is certainly good for us in terms of expanding our influence in the US but I don't see why Beckham & Co. would want to do it.

The whole idea of siging Messi would to raise profile of their own brand of Inter Miami.

Cant see any logic in them giving that up to then pay Barca to use their name.

Doesnt make sense.

It is because in theory he is taking less now for the longer contract to get paid over time.

Otherwise he would reject contract.

The rumor of us paying 240m (I assume it is pre-tax) for four seasons is not much less than what he is earning right now, right? Essentially 120m a season?

When he is 35 or 36, of course he is going to earn a lot less than he is earning today, at Barcelona or elsewhere.

The salary is said to be over 10 years and still being paid when back as an ambassador and half of what he is on at moment while still playing at least.

That is salary though and huge part of his 130m a season was massive signing on fees so not sure where lie on that.

Earning less at 35/36 is irrelevant to the idea of why the rumoured contract would be in place it is all about him taking less now to get it at a later date and to be tied to club after retires.

I got no idea how it would work and am admittedly just throwing wild speculation based off of bones of information.

But the benefit for Inter Miami would be that they get the exposure of the Barcelona brand, but more importantly they also get Messi who would theoretically still be contracted to Barcelona on this long term deal. So maybe they pay us a few as you say, or maybe they give us equity in exchange for us placing Messi there and both sides gain mutual financial benefit.

They have a legal issue over using the Inter name, so they may have to rebrand anyways. In that case they may be interested in entirely dropping the Inter Miami brand and re-launching with the Barcelona name and the signing of Messi.

It is not as if Inter Miami has built up enough brand equity to worry about losing it as it is.

So you are saying the 240m figure is for the entire 10-year span of the rest of his career with the club, in different capacities? Still too much, if he is only going to be playing for us for two more seasons out of the 10.

My point is we shouldn't be subsidizing his wages at Inter Miami (or elsewhere) when he is not playing for us anymore. Messi as an ambassador should not be making near as much as Messi as a player for us.

Well, their own brand would be Barcelona Miami in this example (or even FC Miami with the Barcelona brand association).

So they would not be losing alot of brand equity moving away from Inter Miami. One could say they would have more to gain with an official FC Barcelona association (including having Messi sign to launch it) than with the current unofficial Inter association.

And they may even have to change from the Inter name anyways, due to the ongoing legal case with Inter.

I agree with JamDav here, I think Beckham and his fellow investors are more interested in getting exposure of and growing their own brand, instead of paying royalties to us to borrow our name, making them look like a subsidiary of ours. Nah.

Stronger and makes more sense to build own brand as stand alone club that is what they want.

Where are you getting 240m from?

I am saying he is taking a lot less than normally would for next couple seasons and that is being averaged out and whatever they feel he is worth to take back as ambassador and keep links to club.

His wages wont be subsidised as much as delayed from what would get in next two seasons.

What would you propose they offer him?

Maybe. But then what do we get out of this long term contract and Messi going to MLS in a few years?

Two seasons starting at 34 and 35 years old, then he goes to MLS at 36 and they pay a % of his wages to us. So the two years (or more) in MLS we are paying for nothing as he is part of Inter Miami and bringing zero benefit to FC Barcelona at another club.

Then MLS we are only half way through his deal and have to think of ways to make use of the Messi name to pay the 24m year outgoing to Messi.

Deal screams of desperation.

240m is not too much for 10 years. He'll be making Barca over 100m a year as a club ambassador. We could bring Suarez as head of La Masia as well. And Neymar as chief of Public Relations Office. MSN reunited.

From Barca Blaugranes' (which is banned from this forum for whatever reason). Not sure what their source of the 240m is.

I think we need to be realistic and pay what we can pay and pay the bulk of his salary based on the two seasons he will be playing for us.

Why would Barca expect anything out of him going to Miami?
